Title: 2.9 12v stalling
Post by Paul_Boulden on Jan 18th, 2005, 9:58pm
My 1996 2.9 12v auto ( 128,000 miles ) stalls when warm & in gear. This has happened a couple of times in the last year and cleared up by itself, now it is back with a vengeance. Once up to temperature, slowing to idle in gear causes a stall, gearchanges are also rough. If I put it in neutral & blip the throttle it will idle OK and changes will be OK for a while. The Idle Control Valve has been cleaned which seemed to effect a cure but after a few days the problem returned. Suggestions range from a dirty / damaged ICV to a dying gearbox.

To increase the problem I am disabled ( and on a very tight budget ! )

Sounds like you need to replace the ICV or Throttle postion sensor as it is sometimes called... That is the usual cause of the problem... Its the same as far as I undestand on the old Granada .. so there are plenty of 2nd hand ones out there.. But Others may know more than me on this one.. But that where I would be going or coming from.....Try giving it a good clean and diassemble the whole of it as far as you can .. its worth etting some contact cleaner.. It is after all only a variable potentiometer.....with GOLD plated terminals...

Hi Snoopy,

Thanks for the input, I have taken the ICV apart and soaked most of it in carb. cleaner for an hour and given it a decent clean. This has improved matters a lot but it isn`t quite "right" so I think the problem has been located but a new ( er ) ICV is the solution.

Paul if it revs up and down on tickover when warm then try checking the gasket between the inlet manifold and head it is easy to remove only six bolts I had this problem with an old 12v granada I was told its a common problem. it also causes it to run rough if the air leak is quite bad.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the thought but that`s not the problem, revs are steady, if a little high. I`m now sure the ICV is failing and will need replacing.

Thanks,

Paul
