Hi OHC,

I had the same sort of thing happen to me last year - ball joint popped off in heavy rain (natch) - ooo, dear!

I used a cable-tie at the circled point, just to keep it together.  (Don't tighten the tie too much, else the wipers won't move at all!)

If the ball-joint on the motor spindle or the left-hand side (in the pic) pops off, you have a trickier problem, sorry!

I was lucky enough to pick up a replacement wiper mech at my local scrappy the next weekend.  I also notice there's one on eBay at the moment... (Item number: 4519343413)

I had the same problem on my Granada a few years ago, the shorter of the two wiper linkages kept coming off, this part is available from Ford for about £5.  (sorry i'dont have finnis code anymore, and Microcat doesn't list it as being separate, but should still be available)

However, once I had bought the replacement linkage, and fitted it, the problem persisted, due to the actual ball joint being worn..  Ended up replacing the mechanism brand new from Form £50

Maybe worth trying the replacement short linkage first, alot less hassle, than replacing the whole lot.

Where the yellow band is the two cable ties should be crossed over at this point is the way I understood Eddie does it... In an 'X'  Pattern

Snoopy, where can I post the piccy?
The cable ties are looped under the  ball joint ONLY,and not under the other arm.
They effectively work by keeping the ball from the bottom arm from popping out of the upper arm socket.

Sorry I meant OHC

Had the same problem with the wiper.
By reversing the arm the problem is solved.
So put the end which falls off at the wiper motor side.

I had the same problem with the ball joint falling apart, whilst attempting to put it back together the main arm became bent up, away from the motor, this held the joint together and, with a good packing of grease, has held for some months now although this has made the wipers noisier

Plumbers PTFE tape can be used in an emergency to pack out the joint.

It lasts for several weeks - just wrap the ball with several layers of tape and reassemble. Adding grease or other lubricant extends the life the bodge.
