Title: Bad Idling
Post by pallieter1942 on Feb 3rd, 2005, 11:09am
I own a scorpio 2L automatic.Essence.
The idling is most of the time quite normal but However sometimes unexpectly on a traffic light or so the idling becomes very bad, going to from 1000 revs to 700.
when i switch the engine off and start it again the problem is over and the idling at 1000rev is perfect.

what can be the reason?
it seems like restarting the engine has the effect of a reset.

Look through http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pooridle.htm for some clues.
It sounds to me like you may have a sticking throttle plate - a hanging throttle. The butterfly valve sticks on gummy deposits inside the throttle body - turning the engine off and starting it again pulls the butterfly closed again.
Clean the inside of the throttle body with good carb cleaner and make sure the butterfly valve can move freely before you reassemble it - that should sort it.  ;)
