Title: Shaking 24 V Cosworth
Post by Hazy on Feb 8th, 2005, 4:58pm
When I'm driving smoothly and the rpm is about 2000 (+-400) the car is shaking. If I increase the speed shaking stops. But after while with bigger gear (automatic gearbox) shaking starts again. I can notice the shaking only with gearbox position D, not with 1 or 2. OD doesn't make difference. If I have about 2000 rpm the car is shaking every time. If I push gear to N, shaking stops again. Where I should find out the reason for this? Car shakes so badly that it's almost impossible to drive. The engine is running very well.

WOW!,

It might be wise not to drive  this car anywhere  till you have sorted out this problem.

                 Things to check =

                  Wheels not fitted properly,
yeah, it does happen!  or  badly unbalanced
                    wheels

                 Engine and gear mountings.

propshaft  and centre bearing ( my car  has
slight  vibration at 30 to 40 mph  , I  suspect
                 it's the bearing ).

Wheels are ok, not that simple.
It could be gear mountings, I'll have to check. But why it's shaking only when rpm is about 2000. No shaking when rpm is nearly 3000. It doesn't shake when speed is low (0-50 km/h). What about mass airflow sensor (MAF)? Car is driven about 160000 km. First time I noticed this shaking in rainy days and it has gone worst. Now it shakes also in dry days. I haven't used yet OBD-2 program but I think I should.

Hi Hazy ...  are we talking of " shaking " as in the body ?? .. or as in a misfire ?? ..you say the engine is running well but do you mean it sounds ok in neutral ? .. If you do mean shaking as in body then its almost certainly going to be related to propshaft or drive shaft UJ's ..or even loose rear bearings < less likely > .. otherwise it's quite possible that the engine seems ok at 2000 and then misfires or " breaks down electrically " as you ask for more power .. if UJ's then you feel it worse at lower revs and seems to improve at some point ..for the same reason that a buckled wheel vibrates worse at a lower speed . ..or why a punctured tyre rarely deflates until you slow down ... regards .....
