Title: No power, bad sound, Cos 24 V
Post by Hazy on Feb 12th, 2005, 2:40pm
I have never had this much problems with any car than this 1995 Cosworth 24 V. Everytime when the last problem is repaired there comes a second one. Anyway...
About month ago when I started the motor it sounded very sick. There wasn't power and sound was like an old diesel motor (not possible to drive). I did't do anything, just waited for couple of hours and after that there wasn't any problems. Car was running very well.
Now about month later same thing again but it won't stop. The motor just started to make that noise and a huge lack of power. Yesterday when I drove car to garage it was running very well. Oil level is of course ok and it's the right oil.

Could it be broken EGR valve?

it won't be EGR related Hazy  ..what about a cat broken up ? .. can't be timing chain related as it seemed to clear last time .. but rattling noises and low power may indicate cat ...  STN

I would agree with STN. When the CAT broke up on my previous Cossie, the power dropped off and then came back a bit then went altogether. Accompanied by some awful noises. Changed CAT and everything was fine

Thank you for your help. Which is the easiest way to check cat condition?

hi there

give it a tap and you should hear a rattle. or check it with obd-2.

or a quick way if you have access to any sort of temperature probe is to measure the temp about two inches < 50 ml > in front of the cat and then just behind ... if there is not at least 40 degrees celcius difference ..then the cat is kaput !!

Hi Hazy and all.

You are probably suffering from SCORPIOSIS..

I had the same problems.

A large injection of Cash is required to cure this.

New Cats and sensors fitted and all is well untill the next attack of SCORPIOSIS!!

IMHO the car suffers badly from cascades of problems from one root cause .. which makes diagnosis and repair that much more difficult.

From what's been said it could be the CAT has collapsed but look upstream as to why.

If pre 06/96 then it could be wiring rot. If over 100K miles then check the fuel filter has been changed at 60K service. Check for Jet wash to interior of engine compartment (soaking the plugs with water).

The 24v is complex and in several cases the supposed 'clever' PCM is tricked by a fault into doing dumb things which cause more problems, partially due to it's ablity to mask problems.

Get it scanned, even if it costs money at a FMD, then get a competent engineer to assess the state of the primary systems relating to fuel and spark management (IAT,MAF,H02S,TPS).

It does sound like a CAT has collapsed and plugged the exhaust which can be checked in under an hour but ask for the pieces before accepting a verdict!

Best of luck. I've been there and the eventual answer is not Ford!
