Title: What a Nice Way To Spend Saturday Evening
Post by Ford-Son-Major on Feb 13th, 2005, 1:36am
Just replaced both cats and four sensors on the 24v.

Same journey Stevenage to Luton.

1. av/mpg 23.4 with old cats fitted (prior failure of r/h cat)

2. av/mpg 21.4 with guts knocked out of both old cats (awaiting new cats from fordpartsuk)

3. av/mpg 25.6 with new ford cats and sensors installed.

Its nice and quiet now I can even hear the leather squeeking!

well done Mike !! .. may we know the final cost ? ..and did you encounter any problems with studs ..cat brackets .. and so on ? .. did you change the top sensors .. I take it that you will have .. must have gone ok as you seem very chilled out about it ..  :D :o .. I'm a bit surprised at your catless figures as they usually improve rather than decrease economy .... regards ... STN

Hi STN, and Readers

Final costs as follows:

1. Qty 4 Oxygen Sensor (4 wire) not original @ £28.35 ea - Total: £133.23 inc vat. Ex Motor Serv Milton Keynes

2. Qty 2 Ford 1015823 + 1015824 Cats @ £229.50 ea - Total: £539.32 inc vat. Ex fordpartsuk.

3. Qty 2 Ford 7012906 Flange gasket @ £2.63 ea - Total: £6.18 inc vat. Ex fordpartsuk.

4. Post and Pack ex fordpartsuk @ £19.96 inc vat

5. Other parts such as copper coated exhaust nuts, shrink sleeve, exhaust sealant, ty-raps etc approx £10.00

6. Total Cost for parts: £708.69..

The studs and brackets aligned up well.

The secret is to leave the cats to manifold nuts slightly loose untill you install all the brackets and then tighten up to spec.

The old plugs from the oxygen sensors were installed on the new sensors. I cut the wires and crimped onto new sensors making them the same length. all terminals fitted with shrink sleeve.

Both of the old cats with the guts removed were black inside indicating the fueling was running rich as per my previous figures show. Possible that the oxygen sensors were on there way out.

Better go to work now and repair a few machines to pay for this bill.

WHO SAID FORDS WERE CHEAP!  again lots of £££

bit strange isn't it that so many parts are unavailable ... but you can always get the cats !! ... wonder why .. dohhh !!  ...... and surprise surprise they ONLY fit the Scorps ... no apparent probs in setting THOSE up for such a low production model !! ......STN

Hi STN
One of my cats came from Bridgend Ford via fordpartsuk and the other from Ford Germany.

They had been on order from Germany for a couple of weeks. So I think they have made a new batch up and stuck the price up accodingly.

Nice one Henry!

Did you manage to remove the cats without removing the flexi exhaust pipes?  The bolts holding the flexi pipes to the first silencer look too corroded to survive removal on mine.

Oh and did you manage the job without putting the car on a ramp?  I'd be looking at axle stands and flat on my back on the drive in my case!.

Just done both cats on my 24v.Luckily had the use of a lift , but should be OK with ramps.Thought seperating cat and flexi would be  a problem but once clamps were undone they fell apart! Only problem was one stud..drivers side tucked at back managed to undo using extension bar and universal joint on socket.Recomend using 6 sided sockets to prevent rounding of yer nuts!Took about 2 hours.
Soak all nuts with duck oil and leave as long as you can.
Managed to get two cats for £260 and £40 refund on old cats.obtained from GKN Auto Parts (Trade). One web site wanted £760 for the pair...delivered free!
Good Luck

That's very interesting.  I have been quoted £500 fitted by a local tyre & exhaust place.  I cheapest quote for cat have been £366 including fitting kit (gaskets+bolts) and delivery.  £260 is a very good price but I doubt if I'll find anywhere that good although I will keep on looking.

So just to recap, I can leave the flexis in place and I'll need an extension bar and u/j.  I already have a set of six-sided 1/2" drive sockets so that's a plus!
