Title: Limited speed when cold
Post by pallieter1942 on Feb 24th, 2005, 10:14am
I own a scorpio 2L Automatic Essence from 1996.
When cold it is impossible to go faster than 40 km/hr .
it is like the power is cut off once the car reaches the speed of 40km.
when I set the gearselection handle in neutral the revs however easily go up to 4000 and more.
thus no limitation in revs but in speed.and lack of power
after lets say 1 or 2km of driving at limited speed then suddenly the problem is over and the car runs perfectly.
hours later after working time everything is normal but next morning when the engine is very cold: the same problem.
I have already renewed the temperature sensor (without succes.)
Perhaps it has somewhat to do with the automatic gearbox.altough selecting 2 or1 instead of D doesn't help.

I should be very  glad if the forum can help me with the right suggestion!

This sounds to me like the car is dropping into LOS or Limited Operation Strategy which is it's limp home mode when a problem occurs.
I am no way knowledgable in the problem but it is mentioned on this page..

One of the more knowledgable guys will almost certainly come along soon to confirm or deny my diagnosis.. ;D

hi there

i'm thinking along the same lines as george. have you checked the level and condition of your gearbox oil? this must be done with the engine warm. with the engine RUNNING at all times, cycle through the gears slowly three (3) times each. then check the level. it should be up to the max level and should be a reddie colour and will smell like oil. if it's black/brown and smells burnt, then this is a bad sign.

my thinking is when cold, the car isn't receiving all the correct signals from the gearbox(?). your should get the car checked for any error codes as i would think some will be there.
