Title: Clutch / Gearbox Joy
Post by hybrid on Feb 24th, 2005, 3:16pm
Hi Everyone

I have a 1996 2.5TD Ultima with manual gearbox. Its been off the road for the last 6 months due to a cylinder head crack and theiving ebay sellers. I digress.

I got the car back on the road after replacing the head and for the last week its been great. Yesterday however, while pulling up to a junction the car took on a mind of its own. Moreso than usual.

With the foot fully planted on the clutch, the car made a slight grinding noise and began to pull away. After this, selecting gears became a lot more difficult but not impossible. Later, the pulling stopped and started sporadically

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? I had the same problem on my last car, a 2.0l Mk3 Granada but was unable to resolve fully before being rear-ended.

I have slight inclinations to the clutch but theres no slippage whatsoever. Could it be the gearbox and if so, does any manual box fit. I think its the T5 warner-borg i have but not sure.

I really need to get this resolved before I rename her Christine and let her drive where she wants  ???

Thanks very much if you can help

It sounds as if the hydraulic release mechanism is shot, not holding the clutch off.

If youare not familiar with it, its an annular(circular) hydraulic ram that pops out when you put your foot on the pedal--a bit like the brake circuits. A piston attached to the pedal forces fluid through to the ram ,extending it.

Possible a leak in the connection between actuator attached to pedal and the release mechanism, have a look for that first.
