Title: Removing Stickers
Post by Nick_H on Feb 24th, 2005, 9:28pm
Hi all,

I'd be grateful for any advice you may have for fool-proof ways of removing years-old stickers from car's paintwork.

You know - like a 'GB' sticker slapped on the tailgate...

Thanks.

Nick H.

Borrow the missus' hairdryer to soften it up and peel very slowly & carefully.
Might be better to wait until it is warmer weather.

And it'll probably need cutting / polishing afterwards.

A very strong solvent usualy does the trick. I'd recommend Hammerite paint thinners, just remember to wash off with plenty of warm water afterwards.

Used to get alot of this when I worked in the Valeting trade.  As Paul said, heat it up, with a hair dryer until it goes really soft, then clean up and adhesive with Tar and Glue remover, then polish.

Be carefull if the sticker is on the bumper, as too much heat, will cause the paint to come off with the sticker.  Think it has something to do with the Plastic primer the use on Bumpers.

Hope this helps a bit.

I would have suggested the hair dryer treatment to and don't forget that WD40 is good for shifting some adhesives.

if you have any adhesive residue after the sticker is gone, then parafin is pretty good at clearing it too.

White spirit normally does the trick. Got the GB sticker off my Ultima Estate's bumper very easily.
