Title: A nasty clonk Post by derekne on Mar 2nd, 2005, 11:06am I was driving my scorp in the poring rain today and there was a nasty big clonk sound. Instantly I thought the wipers and arms had thrown themselves off the car. They had stopped working. Pulling the car over I could see the wipers just sitting on the bottom where they should be when switched off. They werent moving At all. I tried operating the stick off and on and nothing. Then I could see and smell smoke. The smell was an awfull burning smell. 2 hours later it still is as strong we can hardly breath in the car. The smoke appeared to be coming from the ball joint on the drivers side. I think clearly the fuse has gone but im dreading why? I dont like to replace fuses just willy nilly. I like to find out what the cause is. As it is raining and snowing I dont want to open my bonet as rain is sure to get into my engine bay and wires. So for now im twiddling my thumbs. I have never had any problems with water getting in my wires or fuse box. I have always kept a close eye on it as it regularly crops up on here. Im very much betting my fusebox and fuses are all dry. As they are all sealed very well. I know there has also been a past post not long ago about wiper arms but no links work on the old thread. You sure do appreciate your wipers more when you havent got any and its lashing down with sleat ect. :'( Does any one have anything to add (help) please. |

Title: Re: A nasty clonk Post by Eddie on Mar 2nd, 2005, 11:19am Hi again! It sounds horribly as if the motor has burned out. Take a look at the arms, has the arm that goes from the motor(drivers side) to the centre connection, become disconnected? If so it may have jammed the linkage and seized the motor. :( The linkage problem is as common as muck on Granadas and scorpio's. The linkage can be fixed fairly easily but if the motor is kaput then...... eddie |

Title: Re: A nasty clonk Post by derekne on Mar 2nd, 2005, 12:07pm Hi, Ive just dashed out wile the snow stopped. With a plastic sheet to divert the sleet from my bonet lid when I open it. What did I find? Well I found that there are two arms one the slave. The master comming from the motor. Where it joins the slave had actually come off. :-/ The master rod had jammed when I stopped at side of road earlyer and tried the stick to operate the wipers. That possibly explains the smell if I had kept it on it would sertainly of burnt out. As it could not move totaly stuck. I was wrong in thinking the fuse had gone as it actually strangely hadnt :-/. I have pushed the rod back on (together) and it works fine. Is this normal for the rod to come off like that? Is there suposed to be something on the back of the rod like a nut when its pushed together? I couldnt see any parts which was could have been on the back. It is a silly desighn if it can just come off like that. With nothing holding it together. Infact its dangerous im pleased I wasnt flying up to scotland on the A1. There Could of been a serious accident and 1 less scorp. Thanks again Eddie :) Derek |

Title: Re: A nasty clonk Post by derekne on Mar 2nd, 2005, 1:55pm Yes there is a plastic cup on the end. But guess what.... Well I get 3 wipes from the wiper then "CLONK"...... it comes off again :'(. Im thinking of trying to cable tie the thing on somehow. Its such an awfull noise when it happens. Ill have to wait for a break in the snow now its belting down. 10 meters vision only out there. Cheers... Derek |

Title: Re: A nasty clonk Post by dart on Mar 6th, 2005, 1:37am Yes you can bodge it, but it will be a temp job! I had the same thing happen. Drilled a small hole through the ball joint and arm, inserted a 3mm nut and bolt, worked for 6 months, fell off again, then bought the new unit from ford(£85) no probs since! not many other ways round it afraid to say mate! (and yes I have tried rubber bands, wire, tie wraps, silicon adhesive you name it!) It still drops off eventually! Hope you get it sorted! ;) dart |

Title: Re: A nasty clonk Post by derekne on Apr 6th, 2005, 11:49pm Yes the bodge did fail a wile ago. Going up to scotland at 11.30pm yes when it was lashing down and I was doing 70mph. :-X I just had to wind window down. And stick my head through the window for 1 mile. Until I could get off the A1 safely. :o Only good thing about this little nightmare is that. I cleaverly kept some spare cable ties in the glove box. As I was warned it was a temp fix. I just new it would snap when I started up the A1 I had a feeling. :-/ I didnt even have a torch so I used the glow from my partners phone. I snaped the un needed length of the cable ties with a lighter my friend accidently left in my car. I just burned through them. But I have since replaced the hole lot motor as well. Which was kindly received from a member on here. Thanks George. ;) Regards....... Derek Wiper is going great now. |
