The heater on my 1996 2.9 12v Ultima blows little air from the side vents but a lot from the centre, are they all like this or is there a flap sticking somewhere ?

Can only say Paul that on mine it all comes out the same from all the upper vents.

Oddly a 96 ghia estate I borrowed was similarly feeble from the end vents - perhaps it`s me !

but mine is the other way around, comes out the sides real powerful but not so strong as the centre.
i alway have mine set to the far right, that's windscreen i don't bother to keep swopping all the time.
the air mixes all together anyway.

I have mine set on feet 'n' screen but it does still come out of the face vents more powerfully than any of the others.

and to JOHNV if you have it on screen all the time the a/c is ON by defaut even though there is NO a/c light ON it is not possible to switch it off when in screen mode...

Yeah, mine does the same so it seems to be a common quirk of the system, I'm not complaining though, on recent mornings where the outside temp. is well below zero within three minutes of the engine being on there is oodles of lovely hot air to warm me bones.

Never had a car with a better heating system.

thanks snoopy, that's some more i learnt.
but i alway like to have the a/c on. not worried about if it uses a bit of petrol.
i read somewhere on this site, that if you don't use the a/c you should switch it on at least once per month, something about lubication of the unit or something like.

that right' on three of my cars, the heat starts to come out within just one mile but at three miles, it real warm just like you say.

mmm mine only gets warm when i'm stationary when moving the temperature gauge drops and only get luke warm air it's a 96 ultima saloon

i got one car that does that, never get warm, before I look to therostat, I going to after a run, and with the engine running, with a pair of leather gloves on, undo the filler cap slowly to see if that might dis-place any air that may or maybe not in the system.
If that don't do anything, I will put in a new therostate and drain and refill coolant very slowly.
The strange thing is, even with cardboard in front of the raditor, that does nor lift the temperture either.

Steve(lufc),
Its sounds as if you have either a blocked or leaking matrix. The symptoms you describe are exactly what I had, turned out to be a very small leak in the heater matrix. There was no sign of a leak in the car (wet carpet etc.) but there was a funny (curry) smell,no amount of backflushing etc. would help.
In the end I ripped the dash of to look at the matrix and found a mess. The bottom of the matrix was covered in limescale type of crud and could be seen to be weeping.
Sorry to suggest such a problem.

Eddie were you losing coolant with that problem? or was it not noticable?

eddie' funny you should mention a smell, there is a smell. looks kike the dashboard is coming out, i guess there is one screw to undo and the dash swings out of the way to make this the easiest and quickest job on the car !!!!!!!!!!!!. thanks eddie ::)

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the part ( heater matrix ) is cheap to buy but the job of changing it is complicated. Is this job written up anywhere ?

a quicker solution i think is to buy some big coats and gloves i'm going with that

Thanks Mr F., I have problems navigating the main site as I can`t get the buttons on the left, a search under "Heater Matrix didn`t bring up the page.
The job looks time consuming rather than difficult, worth a go if you have a spare few days and an extra car to get the one part / tool you had forgotten.

There was a loss of coolant,but it was so small,had to be topped up once a week. I think the amont was so samll it would evaporate befor reaching the carpets etc.

The worst aspect next to being frozen in winter was the pong!

I have to admit I did keep puttting the job of, but one day my concience got the better of me!

However a good read of the forum write up and a staedy methodical approach was all that was needed, dismantle and replace the matrix day one,replace the bits day two. The single most difficult bit was disconnecting the pipes at the engine side bulkhead.
