Hi all

Well, I am looking for some advice from you good people on the board as to my options concerning my Scorpio. First I need to outline my sorry tale though...

I bought my scorpio 2.5 TDi ultima in november for £1600, 'N' reg with 110,000 on the clock. I took it to Evans Halshaw for a service and for them to look at my speedo which wasn't working.

It turned out that it needed a new instrument binnacle and 2 new wheel bearings...

So, £1200 later with a new (used) speedo and new bearings and a service I drove off, only for the car to lose power about 3 weeks later. Back to Evans Halshaw she went.

It turned out that a hydraulic lifter had broken and so £1500 later I got my car back.

3 weeks later the car suddenly loses power again and starts making an ear -splitting BANG BANG BANG noise. Yes, she has dropped a valve. Evans Halshaw tow her back to their garage and tell me that its not the cylinder they worked on but a different one and that now it really needs a new engine.

Evans Halshaw also tell me that the engine is a motorboat engine and is only used in this model and nowhere else so is hard to find.

Now I have no money whatsoever and a dead car. What I want to know is, would any of the petrol engines fit in her (ie on my diesel 5 speed manual box) and if so which ones? And does anyone know if I could get a recon diesel or petrol engine for her? Is it even worth it? I have spend £2700 already on her on top of the £1600 I paid for the car and if I pay for a recon motor I doubt I would get more than the £1600 back if I sold it. Its a shame because its a lovely car with the Cosworth alloys on her and fully loaded leather interior, 6 months tax and the premium ICE pack with RDS multichanger.

Can anyone offer advice or information? And do you think I should try and get compensation from Evans Halshaw? They worked on the number 2 cylinder and it was the number 3 that went this time - clearly they fixed the symptom and not the cause. Should I try and take them to small claims court and get my dosh back?

The engine is not only build in boats. it is used in a jeep also.
the company vm is known as a company whitch produces engines for ships and boats also.
one question, i did not understand your story at all:
the garage said, that you need a new engine, but why?
sometimes the puchrod gets their own way. Please look at this:

Hello Gavin,

You fixed your problem, fine!
But can you tell me, what exactly are the push rods and the rockers?
Where to find them?
I own a 95 Scorpio Diesel. I would like to know if something equal to
your trouble shows up on my scorpio.

This engine is used in the cherokee jeep and the rover 825 and all though you garage said it wasnt the head they worked on they would still have to take that head off its not possible to remove one head without affecting another as the bolts have washers on them that go across 2 heads which would mean you wouldnt be able to undo a head and not affect the others ask any desent garage with knoledge of the vm engine they will tell you the same

sorry to hear about your car, i bought a 2.3 ultima for £1400 but had to spend another £1300 to put all the faults right then ended up selling it for £1050 so you could probably understand why i would never buy another one.
however they are smooth comfortable cars but the costs are just too much and have gone back to a mk2 granada which in my opinion are a lot more reliable and don't cost too much to fix.

how was the £1500 broken down on the invoice robsa ?? .. the company would have been totally incompetant if they only dealt with one cylinder unless expressly asked to < and i very much doubt that ! > ..let us know please .... regards ...STN
