Title: sat nav systems
Post by mikeb on Mar 7th, 2005, 11:05pm
I'm thinking of getting a sat nav system and have a scorp with a heated front screen. Has anyone got any advice on what I should get.

Mike,

it depends on your budget and how much information you want.

I have a Ford travelpilot in mine. It replaces the 7000 radio and does need a bit of messing with the wiring. Also you need an antenna and a compatible cd changer if you want to continue having cds playing. I didn't bother cos I am old and listen to 5live!!

You could go for an after market tom-tom type one, but these have never appealed to me.

My antenna is in the back window on one of the speakers and it works really well.

This is my type and it fits really well:

You could go for the full colour Ford VNR9000:

I had one of these in for a while but I never really took to it so sold it again

Ebay is a good source for these as well as the antennas and navi disks as well

I have the use of  Medion PDA SAT Nav system and that works well in the scorpio on its pod, a hand held Tom Tom works well....

We went for the hand helds as they can be taken from car to car and also are a PDA ....

But it really is a personal choice...

If you need to program this one one with POI's then you DO have to purchase a small peice of additional software about £20 but with the Tom Tom you do not

If you really need a comparision then go here

I must be a bit old fashioned as I find sat nav never seems to take you the best route so I just use a map! Then if I take the wrong route it's my fault.

Seriously though a couple of my HGV drivers have bought the tom tom's and find them very good, they seem reliable and accurate, and it saves me money in diesel as they find the drops without too much driving around.

That travel pilot looks pretty smart though.

I almost went for a Navman system but in the end I couldn't convince myself it was worth the money. It may well be worth it for some, but just not for me.
I can buy an awful lot of map books with the kind of money these cost.  :)
