Title: Ignition barell locked! Help! Urgent!
Post by endaf on Mar 12th, 2005, 11:10am
Hi all, bought my 2.3 '97 Ultima back in Sept'04 after reading a lot of info on here, Thanks by the way as ive found this site to be excellent!
But now I have a serious problem with the car!
For a few weeks the ignition barell had been quite stiff but always managed to start the car, that is until a few days ago!On a cold morning, already late for work it seized up completely! I did a search on the forum & website but all I can find is how to change the barell BEFORE it locks! Can any one out there help me, is it fixable or do I have to get another barell? if so cost? would I have to change the whole locks of the car as I assume i'll need a new key for the new ignition barell?
Is it quite an easy job or would I need a pro to get it done-bare in mind that I am not technically minded at all, I just start the car & go!
Appreciate if you can get back to me asap as im currently using the misses car which is not the level of luxury im use to!
Appologies for the long post but its my 1st one ever on here!
Thanks again for all the help ive managed to find on this site, its nice to know us Scorpio owners are not alone!

Hi endaf

I can see that you're sitting there waiting for a reply.  Like you, I'm no expert and hopefully the founts of all scorpio knowledge will arrive shortly.

My key barrell locked a couple of years ago and my garageman took the barrel and my keys to FMC garage. He came back with a new lock which fiited my old keys and I didn't have to change any of the other locks.  Just thought I would share this whilst you're waiting for the real experts to arrive.

Can't remember what my new lock cost.  I've looked and can't find a receipt so I think it must have been beer money.

Cheers

Rod

Sorry I'm not an expert, but this did happen to me last year.

First thing I did was to try all the keys including the red one. Luckily this still worked as it is used so little I presume.
Once I could get the ignition to turn I bboked it striaght into my local Ford Main Dealer who fitted a new ignition lock that fitted my original keys. Cant remember the exact price but it was around £60 to £70.

The main bit of advice I can give is try any spare keys and hope one still works then get it fixed ASAP.

hi endaf

might be worth tryin to spray some wd40 before you go splashing out on a new barrel if you get the straw on the wd40 and spray some where you would put your key and work your key in and out for a bit it might free it up its worth a go

You just need to remove the old barrel and replace it with a new one, which as previously stated can be made to fit your existing key pattern... There are plenty of Auto Locksmiths around if your Local FMD dealership cost too much   If it has locked in place then you might  need the help of some experts .. It is possible to remove the barrel using special tools....

look here for them http://www.home-own.co.uk/ala/

Thanks for your replies guys, appreciate it. Have tried the WD40 & spare key route but still totally locked. Had a look at the ALA website but because I live in darkest west wales the nearest member is about 150 miles away! Looks like i'll have to go through a FMD so im not looking forward to hearing them quote me the price!
If its quite a bit I think I might go for the total lock change as I read on here that you can the whole locks of the car changed & get all new keys (including the master red one, which I never got with the car! plus my drivers side door lock wont lock anyway) all in for approx £140.
i'll go & spray another can full into the barell this morning just in case my scorp decides to be nice to me today!
Any other hints or suggestions would be aprreciated guys!

I realise that you need your problem fixed yesterday but all I can add to the previous comments is as follows: -
I had an ignition lock problem several years ago and had to replace the barrel. It came as a kit and I fitted it myself. I’m sure it was only about £10 - £15 from Ford Main Dealer and as long as when you remove the old one, and strip it down, you take your time & spread all the parts out over the dinning room table methodically. It’s quite a straightforward operation. I don’t remember using any special tools other than may be a pair of circlip pliers.
The pages on this site, regarding rebuild of (Ignition Lock) is very good. Hope all goes well.

quite a common problem on some fords! I come across it most days in my job as a breakdown mechanic. :-/
9 times out of 10 you can get mobile by doing the following. ;)
remove cowling etc.
remove ignition switch from end of steering lock (usually either plastic clips or 2 small grub screws).
the steering lock will now (most times!!!!) release - may need a bit of persuasion / wiggling etc.
you will have to turn the 'inner section' of the ignition switch with something like another key or screwdriver etc to start the car.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO MAKE SURE THE STEERING LOCK IS OFF BEFORE DRIVING VEHICLE!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o ;)
This has helped me out no end of times in the past, and is usually indicative of a worn steering lock barrel. obviously needing to be replaced asap.
Couldn't say for sure why this works....but it does! i suspect it releases tension on the steering lock allowing it to turn a little more freely.

GOOD LUCK......and please let me know if it works for you!

Hi all, thought i'd give you an update on the ignition barell problem.
Im sure you'll all be pleased to hear that im (finally!) back on the road.
Went to FMD for new barell, which they fitted to my exsisting keys all for £20! Ended up paying a mechanic to actually change the barell though as im not technically minded at all & he ended charging me £40 so all in all not half as expensive as i'd thought.
Happy to be back on the road & just want to thank everyone here who gave me some expert advice!
Cheers
