Title: Fuse Problems
Post by Dave on Mar 20th, 2005, 4:03pm
Hi all. A Mr. Paul A  is having trouble getting accepted into the site and has come to me through Yahoo! IM, desperately asking for help! I'll just paste what he said:

"I’ve bought a 1996 2.3 L Scorpio Ghia Saloon, and I have a BIG problem with it. I wanted to clean the fuse box compartment (searching for burnt fuses), after unplugging the fuses and cleaning, when I had inserted fuse no 22 the horn started, and lights where blinking. It automatically stopped after a time but light kept on blinking. I’ve tried to do something seen on the forum.

I even tried to start the engine and it did nicely. With all the doors closed and the hood sensor pressed I’ve introduced again the fuse, this time the horn didn’t make any noise but the light flash for a period and stopped. The real problem is now that the engine doesn’t start at all, no sound no spin no nothing like there’s no starter.

After this I took out the fuse once again and reinserted it with the hood opened…no sound, no horn. Then I have disconnected the battery and reconnected it, the horn turned on but the engine didn’t start. I’m desperate!! Please help me, also I’ve tried to enter the forum by something keeps me from receiving the activation/confirmation e-mail."

What do we think, guys? It's a shame he came to me when Ben's not around! I'm not the best person to speak with with regards to anything remotely technical, but hopefully one of you will have some advice for a new Scorpio owner!

Dave.

(We're talking about the Auxillary fusebox.)

I'm thinking the alarm isn't deactivating itself? The immobiliser is being arsey and has shut everything off?

Fuse 22 is the door modules and is connected to the alarm system...It is in the Central fuse box on the drivers side.

Does sound like a serious fuse box problem .. if he has taken all the fuses out recently and this is the result then that is where to start looking..... In the fuse box.. my first reaction is water/corrosion and he has disturbed something... Give it good spray with a contact cleaner/ water dispersant for starters  and try and see if it needs drying out.

Try making sure all the multiplugs that go into the fuse box from underneath are seated correctly.

I got a mail from a guy calling himself Paul Octavian (from Romania) saying exactly the same thing to the letter. I too am not that good with the Scorp electrics so couldn't help him directly but what you say about the alarm seems to make sense.
Someone will be along soon with a more definitive answer.

EDIT: Posted at the identical second as Snoopy ;D

Reading the post again it might be that he has dropped the black wire that connects to the battery... Seen it done many times and iif so then no power to the electrics.... it can drop down behind the bulk head.... and it is the one for the electronics if i remember correctly.

He was admitted to the forum on the 17th March at 1944hours and if he has lost his password then I can reset it for him  but he IS registerd on the forum

Ahh he seems perfectly genuine. He's from Romania as you say. It looks to me like alarm gremlins... he's now told me:
1: he has an aftermarket alarm fob (and alarm!)
2: he has no Ford Fob
3: his key(s) will not unlock the doors.

So he's relying on the aftermarket alarm fob to unlock the car. This is all eerily familiar... I was in the exact same situation back in October and my God, it was annoying.

He's reading what you're all saying and he's very very grateful. (He also said he can see the mail icons!)

We've discussed an action plan... he's going to put the car back together, possibly unplug the alarm horn if it goes off again (I find it strange that it is... is it possible that the ford alarm could arm itself? He has absolutely no way of dissarming it), then he'll get hold of a Ford fob, program it, and i've suggested he gets the aftermarket alarm taken off as they only cause problems, problems, problems.

Hello Friends !

First I want to thank you all for the help regarding my problem.

I was impressed verry much about yours kindness, and yours pleasure of helping me.

davo helped me enormous, especialy having YM.

I managed to stop the car from blinking the lights and from sounding the horn (by keeping all dors locked and the hood sensor pressed i had mounted the 20 A fuse no 22, the light went on for a few minutes, in this time i had open and closed all the doors, then i had locked/unlocked from the aftermarket alarm remote, after this i have locked the doors once again with the key, and locked with the reomote and then unlock) (to unlock the doors i need to set the aftermarket alarm on and then disarm it to finaly open the doors)  ....the main problem now is that the engine still doesn't start... What i saw strange was the red light from the middle of the windscreean keeps flashing when i turn my key. This means that the car don't know the key ? or does not accept it any more  ?

Hi Paul ...the PATS light on the dash will flash for about four seconds and then go off if all is well .. obviously it isn't ... if it flashes continuously then wait until it starts flashing a fault code and make a note of the code and tell us ..ie: flash flash flash pause flash  ... we can then tell you what the PATS is indicating .. but it is certainly your problem .. regards ...STN

How long should i wait to get an error code from the PATS light because after aprox 1 minute it was still blinking at the same rate (fast). I will try tomorrow for a longer period. Is there a posibility that the car doesn't reconize the keys anymore ? or the key have been erased by starting the engine with the alarm on ?

a little more than a minute Paul .. if there are less than three keys programmed it takes a while longer .. but it really should give you a flash code .. if no code happens at all ..then your PATS module is kaput from water ingress .< it collects on the PATS module bracket and seeps into the module > ..it would however explain your problem .. wait longer first though ... regards ..... Yesterday i got home verry late and i haven't try again. Today i saw the error code of the PATS led and it is like: flash, pause, and 3 flashes. ( flash, pause, flash, flash, flash). I wonder is there's a posibility that there may be another blown fuse ? or maybe a lose wire, because when i bought the car the plastic lid under the steering wheel was a bit lose, it was missing some screws, so i added the missing ones, and now i wander if somehow the screws may have shorten some wires, this i'm gonna check tommorow. But what the code means anyway ??????

Paul,

the code 1:3 means the code from the key is not being received. Have a look at this:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm

Have you another key you can try?  :-/

there's another thing, i have 2 black keys, i do not not have a red key (beeing broken)

From past discussions I think that the fuses for PATS are 16 and 17 by the way.

Do you have a red key?

sorry I missed your post by 1 minute there! I understand that it is possible to get another master key coded to your car, possibly by a locksmith. Has anyone else any experience of this?

I have sorted the problem, it was a verry verry wierd situation. I have called somebody that has a shop with electronics/alarms and is some kind of specialist in this domain. Afeter a few checks, he observed the strange behaivior of the PATS led, he removed the plastic lid under the steering wheel,  first he thought is the connector from the identification unit ( a kind of ring around the key starter), but he dedcided to take it out, imediatly we obsereved a strange pice o duct tape that was all around the module, we went farther and got the tape out and now comes the wierd part, a key chip was fitted on the identification module. My set of keys i have recieved with my car from the ex-owner don't have a chip !!! the chip has somehow felt from its rage of action thats way there was no key / code recieved. Now i got the chip out and i'm keeping it separatly like a remote. Turn the ignition on and then move the chip closer to the ignition switch, the engine starts instantly. I really need to go to a ford dealer and get a set of new "reprogramed" keys. By the way the fuses were ok, and the original car alarm doesn't start if all the dors are closed including the hood sensor

How odd!! Glad to hear you have found the source of the problem, Paul  :)

Best  checking  every  fuse, the electrical system is very sensitive . I remember accidentally  blowing fuse No. 43  ( heated seats/cigar lighter ) and the  b****r wouldn't  start  till  I'd  found it  and  replaced  it.

not uncommon Paul and great news that you're up and running ..what has happened is that the PATS module has gone kaput at some time and whoever sorted it has bought a second hand module and the key for it .. the transducer around the switch is merely the aerial and is the same on all Scorpio models .. so they have taped the chip from that key to the transducer aerial to give a permanent signal.. because the key they obtained would not of course fit the ignition or doors .. the down side of that is that while taped there you did in fact have no anti theft system ... as long as someone could get in or break the lock then the car would actually have started ..  well done though ....... STN

ps.. probably resulting in the need for an aftermarket alarm to give warning ....

i wonder if this has something to do also with the doors that can't be unloked from the key, neither elecrical, neither mecanicaly. Is there a way of unlocking the car beside geting in through the trunk ( if the back seats are not locked) when the battery goes flat ?
