Title: Fitting Towbar  problem
Post by wudz on Mar 24th, 2005, 11:04pm
Hi,
I have just aquired a mint S/H towbar, all is well except the forward brackets two legs have to be fastened onto the diff bracket. The problem is the bolts are half obscured with the diff...do I have to loosen the diff and lower it slightly to attach the bracket or is there two types of fitting for two types of diff..

I could manufacter a different bracket if I knew the alternative fixing point.

The rear section fits OK to the rear bumper fixings..

I have looked at the sites info on fitting and it seems that there was an option in this area..

The sites description is for a Saloon and mine is the Estate , yet all manufactures seem to advertise it is the same towbar for each body, perhaps they suppy an optional front bracket?...

Any one can help would be appreciated...

Cheers

John

John............. I have just come in from work and if i get the chance i will look at mine before i go to work tomorrow, I can't quite remember how i fitted it but there were two different brackets that came with my towbar, but as far as i remember they both fit the same points, they are different because of the different diffs, I also fitted one to my Fathers saloon and i remember this was a pig as i had to undo the large bolt that supports the diff just to get the bracket in, then of coarse you cant quite get to the bolts that fix it, If you do this remember to support the diff with a jack, now thinking about it this is what i also had to do for mine, you can get the bolt back in by jacking the diff up, you may even have to take the weight of the car on here just to get the bolt back in. If you require a pic let me know and i'll try to get one done on the weekend.
Regards
Richard

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for you speedy response it is appreciated.
Seems that the Estate requires the diff to be lowered, what a pain....I still think I have the wrong front bracket as it touchs the petrol tank when held un place, but perhaps when correctly positioned may just clear it, but it did come of a Saloon this may confirm the using the alternative bracket..

How did you get your four Tork bolts out of the bumper....I loosen one then on the next shattered the expensive tork bit and skinned my knuckle....agh...

Any further info would be great...

I have tried to work out what this bracket does, it must be used to stop the rear bracket twisting the rear part of the chassis up and down as the bracket has not have any strength in the push and pull direction due to the length and thickness of the legs on the bracket.

Any further help would be great..

Cheers
John

You may have a problem here, I don't think the saloon towbar fits the estate, or so i was told when i bought mine, My bolts came out ok, I will take some pics for you if i get a chance on the weekend and post them here for you. When it is all bolted together you will see a difference in the strength, I think my bracket and the old mans bracket both touch the tank too, nothing to worry about.

Hi Richard,
Ok about the bracket, all the other fittings are OK, it's just this front bracket and with what you said about the big nut on the diff it rings true with my diff...
No don't you be crawling about under you car I will do as you explained in your first explanation sounds just as what I will have to do...What an Easter, I will first have to get these tork bolts loose before anything else...
Happy Easter

Many thanks again

John

Call me a chicken or what  you like, I thought I would change the  drive belt before laying on my back attacking the tork bolts only to find that the take-up idler would no budge when trying to get the belt off...b---r me,,,sprayed WD and a good dose of oil....will attack tomorrow..
Went under to attack the tork bolts after spending £5.00 on new bits (had to buy a kit of five as they did not sell single bits)...first attempt the dam bit distorted...agh and agh again....sprayed all with WD and a good dose of oil.......attack tomorrow...

How is it I had a Montego for four years and only had too change a wheel bearing. couple of silencers, four tyres...oh and a light bulb in over four years and did 47,000 mls  towing some 8,000 mls....mind you a I had forgot the three ton of plastic padding....never ever did it let me down.....Had this a fortnight .... it brings back memories of the days of my youth playing about with a 3lt Ford Farnham Estate..the fly pig as they I think loveingly known as....

I am too old for this,  anybody got a good bodied Montego ;D

did some one say tomorrow never comes... ;D

Cheers

John

Hi Richard,
In my frustration I forgot to say thankyou for the piccy..It seems that your bracket has a dog's leg bend. I will have to check mine tomorrow and my diff seems to be attached differently more like the description  you mentioned in your earlier post..has a large nut in the center of a sort of "u" shaped cradle..
I will get these dammed tork bolts out first and the attack the front bracket problem after...

Cheers
John

not sure if this would help but if diff is full of oil and you take it for a good run the oil and casing should get hot then give it a good squirt with some wd ,its only a suggestion and may not work ,but might be worth a try

Colin, I think i know hat you are saying but this will not help, The torx bolts are in the bumper and the other bolt for the diff is at the rear and is not that hard to take out.

Hi all.
Many thanks for all the input and thanks Richard for the hi-res picture..
There must be two types of bracket, I have the rear bracket for the saloon not the Estate I require, I will have to drop the diff as you said in your earlier posts. Then modify this rear bracket, all in all this a pain in the....but seems par for the course with Scorpios...Again I have fitted towbars before and never had to do anything near to  this just the bumpers off and finished in an hour.......

Love the car though, but it seems that you have  to love them because if you looked at it rationally they are not the most reliable motor, it's great to have the quality site that this is and the comaradery ( spelling) of it's members that can see you through your problems....Fantastic.

Still the tork bolts to attack, but I have been attacked by the Grandchildren today with the bonus though of a reward in Chocolate.......

Just off topic, just booked in for an oil change at  the local National tyre depot special offer ...£25.00 for synthetic 5-30's and filter,,,I was told that Ford had directed them to use this instead of 10-40's.....
would that be correct?

Many thanks again to everybody especially Richard, it is appreciated..

John

No problem at all John, that's what we are here for, can't tell you about the oil though sorry, post a new topic on oil, someone will help you, Just one more thing, when you get those bolts out replace them with M8 hex headed ones and copper grease the threads.

the 4 m8 torx bolts that hold the rear bumper on rust where they go through the bumper bracket,i had to grind the heads off mine then remove the bumper and extract what was left once removed, tried everything to remove them on the car,the only thing i succeeded to remove was the skin from my knuckles  >:(
