Title: aargh ! Snapped tap in hub carrier Post by sprog on Mar 25th, 2005, 8:24pm I was changing a front suspension spring and snapped the head off the 18mm pinch bolt that clamps the bottom of the strut. I drilled through the bolt and was using a tap to cut a thread when the the b****y thing snapped. There isn't even enough sticking out to get the mole grips on. After much bashing and rough treatment (mainly to my fingers) I gave up and will now be phoning round scappies tomorrow. Can it be saved ? |

Title: Re: aargh ! Snapped tap in hub carrier Post by Fitzy on Mar 25th, 2005, 9:40pm Sprog, to get it out you could always weld another bolt to the broken bit then just use a socket to remove it, have done this many a time on my previous cars. HTH Fitzy ;) ;D ;) |

Title: Re: aargh ! Snapped tap in hub carrier Post by sprog on Mar 26th, 2005, 11:16am The problem is the tap snapped about 1/4" deep in the hole. One of my attempts to get it out was to whack it with a punch and BIG hammer,so the threads might be a bit chewed now anyway. It's worth a go though, thanks Fitzy. |

Title: Re: aargh ! Snapped tap in hub carrier Post by bazw on Mar 26th, 2005, 3:22pm you will ned to go to an iron mongers (b and q wont do )and you need to get an armour plate drill bit (they have a stronger shank and flatter angle to the cutting edge dont try these wonder drills like the tungstan ones you see on the tv shops they will burn out in a min. use a lot of oil or get a tin of drill cutting compound to use with it (looks like dog s**t but works ) remember the tap is harder than the drills in a dirll set |

Title: Re: aargh ! Snapped tap in hub carrier Post by sprog on Mar 26th, 2005, 6:14pm I found one in a scrappy,so for the sake of a tenner I took the easy option. That armour drill sounds interesting Baz, a few of those would be handy in the old tool-box. BTW the donor car was in a scrappy in St Helens called Atlas. It was a 2.0 16v saloon in navy blue. The drivers side looked a bit stoved in and the interior was all over the place but under the bonnet it's all there, manifold, coils MAF etc. There number is 01744 612712. Cheers John. |
