Title: Estate rear door intermittant shutting
Post by wudz on Mar 30th, 2005, 8:39pm
Has any body had the tailgate failing to shut, this occured a few days ago then started worked ok, only had the car a few days so I thought I may have done somthing wrong.
Now will not fasten shut, happened when I unlocked it to retrive something out of the back, closed it only to find it would not fasten...
I can hear the locking mech whirling as per norm, but does not catch..

Ahy help or description of the mechanics of the locking section will be appreciated..

Cheers
John

I havnt suffered this problem neither do I own an estate, but this would be my line of investigation.

Open the hatch up,remote lock the car and watch the latch mechanism to see if it operates.

If it doesnt then try some wd40 (etc),if that fails then investigate for broken part of mechanism.

If it does operate then check that the catch (on the floor) hasnt moved, slacken it off and move it all the way to the rear then close the hatch gently. If possible from the inside, tighten up the bolts again or open the hatch and retighten.  HTH

Hi Eddie,
I did get the old favorite out, WD and no change and also the spigot for movement as you mentioned.
The funny thing is that the pivot catch is not sprung like a normal door, it just swings loosely, (CAN ANY OTHER ESTATE OWNERS CONFIRM THIS) but seems to be the design. It looks as though a pawl clicks over a lip on the pivot as it engages the spigot...not too sure how this is made to come into action as it must also be controled some how with a solenoid or motor to activate the locking  mechanics..
looks like I will have to bite the bullet and take all the door trim off and have a peep...bet, in fact guarantee that it will be a skin scrapeing fiddly job....I was just hopeing somebody would say just tap here push there and hi-presto back in working order...one can only dream..

thanks again Eddie

Cheers

I've got the 16v saloon, but had the same problem, the boot would not go into the closed (locked) position. It was the electric actuator that had failed (the remote boot opening option uses it)  It fails in the open position (piston pushed out) so that you can get into the boot (otherwise you would not be able to open the boot to replace the part)

As a temp measure you can just bend the plate the actuator is on a little bit so that it does not push against the locking mechanism. This stops you using the remote open option but allows the keys to work ok. The actuator is the white oblong unit with a little piston sticking out one side, whole thing is approx 6-7 inch’s long.

I bought one from Ford for £22.00 ish

It has 2 little screws holding it in and takes 10 mins to replace.

Hope this helps

When I took the trim off all the bits and pieces worked ok also the solenoid was working.
There are two thin metal rods that go down to the catch mech's they were trying to move so I disconnected the rods and took the catch off........there was the culprit for the pawl not moving across....three small pieces of glass jamming the pawl...All is well again..

I have been picking bits of glass up  since I got the car a sliver and there and now come to the conclusion that the tailgate window has been broken in the past. Anyway just one to log away in the grey matter..

Cheers
