Title: sun roof seal
Post by ferretmobile on Apr 4th, 2005, 3:48pm
I have noticed that the roof seal on the sun roof, towards the bit where the join is, so to speak...
is rising up a tad. I would guess that the metal toothy thing inside the seal has started to corrode ???
So the thing is , has anyone else had this niggling problem and is it a case of pulling off the seal and fettling it or do I detect a severe attack of the dredded
scorpiosis comming on... ::)

I had this on my old red S reg. and used one off an old granada as they seem to last better than the later scorpio ones.

You can't get just the seal from Fords I don't think

I too have noticed this on mine, it's not a problem as long as the  " Bump "  doesn't  get  too  high, then when the automatic  opening is activated it can sometimes  catch on  the roof  as  the   sunroof   lowers  itself  before  moving  backwards.  I've just put some grease on it to prevent the rust  worsening.

Hmm... I'm not sure either as to whether just the seal is available.  :-/

You're not alone with this problem. Loads of Scorpios suffer with it. Mine is no exception  >:(  But luckily I have a whole new (2nd hand) roof to replace it with.

Baz is also quite right about the Granada roof. They do seem to last better. Not sure why that is though.

But anyway, catch the rust early. Thats my advice. And if you're pulling your seal off the roof, take it easy because the metal bit inside the seal can also go weak and end up beyond re-use.

I'll just a question here myself if I may... why is the joint of the seal at the rear of the glass and not at the front? Surely it would be pulled about less at the front.  :-/

Presumably the old granada sun roof is the same size?
and if I can lay my mitts on a decent one, from the comments on this thread, I would be able to put the joint to the front to avoid the slide catching. I also have thoughts on using a smear of clear mastic when re-fixing
a replacement seal which should keep any rust away }{

John, I suggest that you make sure you're sitting down before I tell you.......................................... that 45 quid will be just for the new seal.

:( :(

How is the seal located??  Is it in a (rusting) channel or can I go buy a seal  :'( :'( with the confidence that I can rip the old one out, easily fit the new one and all will now be OK??

Or is the channel likely to be rusted so a new seal won't have anything to go in??

I've been frightened to use the sunroof since it stuck last year!!!!

hi john, the seal sits in a channel around the glass part of the sunroof. mine was not rusty but the metal clips which are in the seal where. this is what makes the seal lift and then catch on the roof when closing. you can just pull the seal off but if you have not got another seal don't take it off. i replaced mine with a new one which is quite easy to do. i managed to refit mine with the sunroof still in place by moving it up and down and back and forward. :)

Thanks Andy, I'll get a seal when I can afford it!!!!.  Just spent £400+ on a new Power Steering pipe, service and MOT on the Bravo (which is now in the bodyshop having a new wing and the bonnet un-dented).  MOT due on the Scorp next month     :(  :(
