hi all
just started doing this but only at start up when its been left overnight,huge puff of white smoke and then ok
not every morning though,also its def only since the last service 2 weeks ago.
Ive checked the oil level and its about 4mm over max could this cause it or maybe the type of oil that was put in>?
i guess it could be valve stem seals bit it seems a coincidence as it was fine 3 weeks ago

My 24v does the same, just when I pull away from the house, but the oil never gous down.

130000 i guess the stems will be worn.

Dunno if anyone else has any bother.

4mm over max won't have any affect but the stem seals do harden and then crack over time and it only takes one to cause the problem you describe.

It's one of those jobs that is a PITA to do and is hours of work to replace a bunch of 50p seals. I have heard that there is a way to do it without removing the head however which involves a compressor and a spark plug adaptor - never tried it myself however.

Worth checking the overrun as well - lift off going down a steep hill and then boot it at the bottom and watch for any smoke - that indicates top end wear.

There are spark plug hole adaptors that allow you to pressurise a cylinder (from a compressor) to hold the valves shut whilst you remove the collets and seals. Never tried it either!!

Just a possible that white smoke is not oil but brake fluid via the servo and vaccuum tapping. I've seen this suggested in other forums but have never experienced it myself.

Worth seeing what level is going down.

i will check the brake and other things mentioned
doesnt seem to be anthing terminal !
just a bit embarrasing when a huge white cloud billows past you for a few seconds
just seems strange as its never smoked at all until it was serviced :-/

You get white smoke from water
blue smoke from oil
black smoke from to much fuel.

rechecked the brake fluids ok
not sure as to the colour as its so cold that im getting a white water vapour smoke anyway
so until the weather warms up i cant be sure
it looks white to me though
huge cloud of it too!

Matt,
What engine do you have?

I think Tobbe is right - IME worn valve seals causing the smoke on starting is blue rather than white, and this wouldn't have happened simply from a service.

I recommend you take some oil out of the sump - 4mm overfilled when cold is reducing the air space in the engine and may overpressurise the oil seals in the sump. It may do the same on the oil trap on the sump breather pipe to the air cleaner - check the air filter too.

I'm racking my brains to think how an overfull sump could cause white smoke - can't think of one LOL. But remove some oil and get the oil level down anyway and see if that makes a difference.

Your cars, when you got the white smoke, was it alot of moisture in the air the night before? Maybe it is just condensatewater from the exhaustgas left in the exhaust system and it is nothing to worry about. If you look around, some days you see many cars smoking a lot...... Maybe it's just the weather ;D. If you don't loose any cooling water then there isn't anything wrong with the car......

my scorp also smokes a bit (white) when the engine is cold, after that it loses color, no brake fluid lost, oil level at medium

it was doing it b4 this cold snap started
i def think its a bit too much oil although as its such a small amount over i was hoping it might just burn it off.its weird as its fine some mornings
its a 2.3 16v
i havent figured out a easy way to drain the oil without taking off the sump guard and the sump plug out
any easy ways? or maybe i should wait for the oil level to drop a few mm until its on Max

drained 1/2 litre 3 days ago,still slightly over max but its been ok fingers crossed
