Hi guys,

I was driving to work this evening, pulled up at lights, as i pulled off there was a whine and a big clunk, the car fell out of gear and smoke came from the drivers side of the bonnet. After a second or two it went back into gear and pulled off. But seems to be stuck in first, when i pull off it judders and then goes to about 25 miles an hour with 4000 revs and thats as fast as i can go. Anybody know whats wrong? is my gear box broken? Any help really appreciated as i love my car. Its a 2.9 V6 the old engine without a MAF.

hi there

sounds bad! don't drive any futher until you had it looked at. it's when into Limp Home Mode, hence the speed/power problem. you need to get it obd-2 scaned for codes. post where you are, someone near you might have a obd-2 lead.

O, im in nottingham, car in city centre, but live near junction 26. guess i should get it towed home,.

Jay,
The 12V engine doesn't have trouble with the timing chain. From the description it sounds like a failure with the autobox - the EECIV has detected a problem and is limiting power from the engine to prevent further damage - LOS.

You'll need an autobox specialist for this one, I think - I don't think it will be good news. Have you checked the condition of the transmission fluid on the auto dipstick. From the sound of it it will be probably be burnt smelling and brown, rather than a clear red.

Ah well. :'(
Mind you, you have a good car still - you will need to spend a lot of money to have a car as large and as comfortable as the 12v you have now.

If the car is in good condition in other respects the Cologne engine is quite capable of 200K miles - so if you use an auto specialist they would be able to remove the A4LDe and recondition it - or replace it with one already reconned - and this would cost much less than buying another car.

is it a hard job to replace the box urself?? cos my moms boyfriend is good with cars, he's built kit cars etc. anyone know if its labour intensive and how much a recon box is??

No, not difficult - just be careful as it's a heavy box - one of the guys might be able to find the procedure for you - I don' have the files with me over here.

Best bet is to find one in a scrapyard with a 3 month warantee - they are generally quite reliable boxes so a fluid and filter change is all that will be needed - should be able to find one for 2-300 quid.

I believe that at least one member had one reconditioned for around 600 I think (that's from memory) - try Exchange and Mart or your yellow pages for automatic gearbox reconditioners.

Better to spend the money on a new box than throw the car away.

Well snoops is here and you have had the best advice ...KEEP the car and get a new / recon box or have that one reconditioned.. Got to be worth it.

Remember that if you get one from a scrapyard, pull the dipstick and wipe it against a piece of clean white cloth - the fluid must be red, not have black bits in it and must smell fresh - sort of a mineral smell. f it smells burnt (like yours does now) then find another one.

There is a replaceable filter in the oil pan that should be changed before you install it in the car - less messy :) and new Dextron III fluid of course.

I've just had a new box fitted. Cost 675+vat (£793 total) and this was for a fuly fitted recon box complete with new filters/oils etc etc....

Place I had it done was Belvoir Auto Transmissions in Newark so not a million miles away, plus the guy'll sort you a loan car so you're still mobile.

An extra £500 quid for a new box with 12month unlimited mileage warranty might make a bit more sense than £300 for one out a scrapper....
