HI
I have a Ultima estae and when Ive been driving for a couple of miles I hear a knocking from the rear end of the car leke its coming from one of the wheels could this be a ball joint etc.It stops after i have driven a few miles more
can you assist please.

There are two possibilities for this.  If it is definitely a knocking sound it is most likely to be a worn/dry CV joint on the rear axle, although you would expect to hear a ticking sound when you are turning a corner to that side.  Jack up the rear and turn and twist the drive shafts on each side and look for radial movement on either of the two CV joints.  If there is any sloppiness the CV joint needs changing.

It could also be a failing hub bearing - although it is more likely you may have noticed a droning noise first.  However, on the Scorpio the rear suspension is quite well insulated and other owners have found a rear hub failed without being aware of it at all.  Because of the pre-load it can be difficult to test for a worn rear hub bearing, but lift each rear road wheel up and spin the wheel to see if there is any rumbling/dry noise.  Of course, if it knocks then you'll know which it is.
