Title: Cosworth with manual gearbox?
Post by Narsil on Apr 24th, 2005, 9:07pm
Hi,
Am a proud owner of a 2,0 8v -95 estate since a couple of years.

A couple of problems have started to apear...comes with age I guess.

But the thing that is keeping me up at night is: Is it possible to bolt on a manual gearbox to the wonderful Cosworth engine? And would it be possible for me to shoehorn it down in my car? :)

Well, got some other problems that Ill be posting here soon. Thank you all for contributing to this wonderful page

(ps english is not my native language)

Hi Baz ..the engine cover doesnt have a pic yet and it's a bit special mate !! .. I will send you a pic though but there's a few different sorts .. flat polished stainless with laser cut lettering ..folded and shaped around the silver octopus manifold as is the plastic original .. ie: whatever lettering you want < ours have fordscorpio.co.uk ..naturally ..and powercraft engineering ...naturally ..haha >.. but can be laser cut with other lettering ...or there's one with enamel that we are doing right now ..could be UNITEC if required too !! ..Cossie standard rad is under £200 recon ..and our special would have to be discussed as you have contributed to it greatly thanx mate ... full alloy of course ..  cheers ...STN

Bill, can I phone you tomorrow with a card number? I would love one of your rads mate!!

The engine cover will look pretty good to I can imagine, one of them next as well, just have to decide which one!!

I just bought a sat nav system for the wifes Galaxy (which she isn't getting till next year!!) but it was a good deal with all the wiring etc!! God I love spending on cars!!

Narsil,
Our 24V engine has been transplanted into other cars, so there is a wealth of experience you can call on if you check out some Kit Car and Car Mods sites.
The 24V will fit okay because the engine is designed to fit into this space. However, it's quite a bit of work. Apart from the engine, you will need all of the following:
engine mounts, radiator.
All of the engine loom, the EECV PCM and the PATS module and transponder and spark and ignition modules.
Propshaft complete.
The exhaust system, EGRVR and tubes.
You would be better getting a diesel 5-speed gearbox and gearbox mounting. It will fit right in and it will have better ratios for the 24V.  Better change the differential unit as well - also for the better ratio.
The diesel gearbox bellhousing will bolt straight onto the 24V engine, but you will need a new spigot bearing in the end of the crank.  I suggest trying the diesel clutch and flywheel - both engines have similar torque and it should take the power ok.
One more thing, leave the Transmission Range sensor from the gearbox connected to the loom in the P position - this will fool the PCM that the car is not moving and avoid it going into LOS when it can't find the autobox connected.

ah yes Eric thankyou .. I was assuming Narsil would take my advice about getting a Cossie to start the project with rather than sticking with the eight valve ..

.... or at least that's my excuse !! ...  :-[ :-X :-[

... and I was tired ... drunk ?  ... ok ok .. I slipped up !! lol ..... STN
