Title: Clunky noise from steering wheel
Post by geraghtyg on Apr 29th, 2005, 6:31pm
Evening All
Think I may have some sort of a problem with my steering. When turing the steering wheel (stationary or moving) it makes clunky noises. Not very loud but I can feel them through the steering wheel quite easily. It feels like the source of the clunk is at the steering wheel end but of course there is the chance that the vibration is traveling up from within the engine end. It has been doing this for about the past year but has been getting more frequent of late - ie: clunking every time I change direction of the steering wheel. Steering is fine and there is no free play with the steering wheel.
Any ideas?

universil joints on column or if they still use it on the ultima a plastic bush that goes through the fire wall
then if not those look at the column to rack joint

Thanks a million bazw. I'll get that checked out when I get time. Sounds like a relatively easy job, in that the whole dash shouldn't need to come out (I hope!) - I was fearing it may be the dreaded steering rack problem :o

There are two centralizing bearings at either end of the column tube, under the plastic shrouds. Enthusiastic use of the adjuster mecanism can cause the bottom one to come displaced. It is only retained by a large spring at the bottom end. (Mine was knocked out by a spotty twit at an MOT test!)

take a look there.
