Title: Gearbox 2.9 12v
Post by Towtruck on Apr 30th, 2005, 9:24am
2.9 12v Auto Ultima 1996. 80k miles.   Yesterday after rolling downhill, with the foot off gas, I went to pick up drive and the revs headed for the red.   I now have only first second and reverse but otherwise the box sounds and feels fine.   This car has had a hard life, as my login suggests, dragging a caravan up some of worst hills in some of the hottest weather you can find in Europe.   On a previous Granny I had similar problems at 70k and 150k which turned out to be stuck control valves which had been “lacquered” by the hot oil.   However I paid to have the box stripped and rebuilt twice including the torque converter.   On the first occasion I was shown the box in bits and the mechanic confirmed that there was nothing wrong with anything and no big wear on the brake bands.

The car is booked in at the same place (in MK) and the questions I have are:

Is it really worth having the box overhauled if they can just remove and clean the control block?   I have rebuilt engines but never been inside an auto box.   Is cleaning the control block something I could tackle myself?

If they do persuade me to have the box stripped and rebuilt is it worth having the torque converter overhauled?    I have looked through all the gearbox posts and I have not seen any relating to torque converters.   Does anyone have experience of problems?

It is possible to remove the control block yourself but cleanliness is of the utmost importance. ( Not recommended lying on your back on a driveway)

I would not have thought is was a torque converter problem as that AFAIK is signified by either slipping or complete loss of drive due to break down of the seals.

If it was mine I would certainly just have the control block checked if there no other obvious signs when the sump is dropped ( bits in the pan and filter) does sound more like a stuck solenoid if there was no noise etc to accompany the loss of gears.

Others might know more though.

I know in the past when I have lost the converter, either a seal of all the fins, but thats a different story, there is nothing at all, just high revs no movement.

its sounding more like a sticky solenoid
