Title: misfire under load
Post by bigmaltwo on May 9th, 2005, 9:45am
2.3 ultima r-reg manual.
i have a misfire which only shows itself when accelerating fairly hard. it starts fine, and idles fine, and will pull smooth unless i accelerate quite hard. the more i floor it, the worse it gets. also shows when blipping the throttle whilst standing.
im going to clean the maf sensor first, but it does seem more like an ignition problem.
has anyone got any pointers to save me a lot of pain in the nether regions!!!!
thanks all.
malcolm doughty.

1) Plugs? - clean or replace
2) Leads? - check or replace
3) Coil pack(s)? - not sure how you test these  ;D

Thats where I would start  :)

Cheers

thanks dave.
just took it upto work to be fault code read.....nothing showing! only thing i thought a little odd was the timing showing approx 25-28 degress advance at idle ??????
just bought set of plugs, so im now out to garage to fit them (and hope!) :-[
is there anyone local to kings norton (south birmingham) that could help with an obd? as my garage's equipment is, shall we say, not exactly up to date!!! :'( :'(
im 90% sure its ignition related, but you never know!
thanks all.
mal.

Hi had a very similar problem with my R Reg 2.3 how I cured mine was to renew the inline fuel filter which is situated under the rear number plate, straight forward to do but beware the bracket that secures it will be rusted up so plenty of release fluid before you tackle it  I am not stating that this will cure your problem but it worked for mine.

If the e-dis doesn't get the first five pulses within the range of 10-57 degrees advance, the system will be set to safe mode and run at 10 degrees advance, according to my tech. book. Constant idle speed on different load (AC, powersteering) is optained by changing the ignition advance at idle speed so the readings you have are probably correct.

thanks to all who replied.
problem is now sorted!!! ;D ;D ;D
when changing plugs i noticed that insulation was breaking up on the 2 wires going into rear coil pack.
half hours worth of soldering later, and all is well :D
so chuffed, i had to have a drink (or 3) :P
one scorp back in full running order.
