Well one problem solved another to go..... :(
I was passing some parked cars with the passenger window down and as I moved off heard a crunchy clicking noise which increased as my speed increased from the rear offside which vanished when my speed increased above 15 mph ish...I suspect one of the U/J's or both...Arrrgggg

First are the hard to change and what is the approx cost all help on the removal would help...

Or

Could I be wrong with the diagnosis...

hi there

could be the u/j. go underneath and massage the 4 rubber boots. this will move the grease about and should help (if it's the u/j  ;))

Been a couple of short trips today and it is getting worse, you may well be correct about the wheel bearing as it does slightly get better or worse if going around a bend or corner which may be the load changing on the bearing...will have a look tonight after the grandchildern have gone,,,,no rest for the Scorpio owner... :D

Fingers crossed it's the bearing...

Wudz. Don't forget there is a guide,with photos,on the site, on how to replace the rear wheel bearing. First thing to check is that you  have large enough socket to remove the nut. It's a size not normally found in the average DIY socket set. The nother thing is to re-check the torque  on the nut after about 200 miles as it has been known to slacken off. HTH Simmo

Well I don't think it is the bearing, jacked up the wheel and tried side to side, top and bottom movement and all seems well no movement at all,,,,,

1) Has anyone changed the U/J's

2) Can you change one or is it a complete drive replacement (both inc shaft).

3) If they can be changed singley, which one is the most likley culprit, inside or outside.

4) Any otherway of confirming the problem other than taking the gaiters off.

For some reason I suspect the outer one, only because many years ago I had a Big Zodiac Farnham estate and one went on that and took out the cast Alloy swinging arm when it broke up...so I am nervous of driving about until it is confirmed one way or tuther....
All help or guidance appreciated...

Had a good look around the site and found that the U/J's are actually CV joints .(What a comprehensive site this is..Great).

The sound I have that is similar to the clicking of faulty front wheel drive cars CV  when turning,,, is this comfirmation of the problem... :-/

BUT  ???.....Has anybody had a bearing faulty yet show no play when the wheel is lifted before I go down the CV path!!!

Before you start dismantling etc. TRy regreasing the CV joints first,either give the rubbers a good exercising to work the grease back in or remove the small diameter clip and push a grease gun nozzle in and pump some grease in (the black stuff). Clip can be replaced with a sturdy cable tie.
The clicking is sometimes caused by a dry joint sticking and releasing as it rotates.

Cheers all,
Well after jacking up and messing around (Pre reading posts) nothing was found.

Used the wifes car yesterday morning and guess what gave the car a short drive with my son listening in the back.....NOT A NOISE...NOTHING....Seems like messing about with the gaiters and perhaps changing the angle of the drive shaft when jacked up may have distributed the grease..so spot on with your diagnosis lads..

Eddie I will do as you say, get the grease gun going tonight and hope no permenant damage has been done to the CV..
