Title: Radio Changed (joystick thing)
Post by jasesapphy on May 15th, 2005, 12:44pm
Hi

Changed my Radio from a 2007 rds to a Ford 5000 jobbie with CD player, the thing is my joystick on the steering colum does not work.

Are the wires any different, the plug fits in the back of the new stereo no problem

You may have to change the RIM - it is under the dash to the right of the steering column and is easy to slide out.

Looks like a black oblong box and controls the stalk - check the numbers on it and post back. I will check the numbers to see if it works with the 5000 (if I can!)

I bought my S/H 24v Ultima in 1998 and it came with a warranty.  The radio is a model 7000 RDS but the steering column stalk became intermittent and the car was returned to Ford.  The fault persisted and the stalk was replaced but a month later the problem was back.  Eventually, after several attempts the Ford garage decided that the 7000RDS was the problem so a brand new 7000RDS was fitted.  After a month the problem was back.  By intermittent I mean all stalk functions were either funtional or gone completely.  Direct knob control on both the original and replacement 7000RDS was always present

I never really discovered the fault but it appeared to be the stalk cable plug/socket at the radio.  I found that by applying a slight sideways pressure at the plug using a rubber band permanently cured the problem.  Remember that over time the rubber bands perish but the postman usually leaves the odd rubber band.

It worked for me and it may work for you.

Best of luck.         73's     Malcolm
