I am having a problem with my 2.9 Ultima est.The temp gague is cold and the heater blows cold (occasionaly warms up but not when its cold outside).Although the engine and all hoses are hot the temp gague is nearly always on the blue.I have changed the thermostat.I was advised that there might be an air lock and to get the front as high as possible and remove the filler cap to let the air escape,this I did and all that happened was about 4 pints of coolant on the floor before I turned the engine off .Any ideas???

next time dont take the cap off ;D untill its cooled
its the best way ive found, just get it on a steep hill if you can and let it idle for a short while then blip the throttle a few times to move the water with the heater on full temp setting (mine gave a gurgle then burnt my leg as id never had hot heaters before)
then when i was home i let it cool and refilled

sounds like it could be a blockage or air lock in the heater matrix, do you get a faint smell of curry when the heaters on?

The car should be on the flat when refilling or topping up the cooling system,air will rise to the highest point,facing up hill will PREVENT air getting to the filler bottle.
Loss of heat from the heater is usually caused by a blocked or leaking matrix. I found that a pressure loss in the cooling system also ruins the efficiency of the heater.

Try reverse flushing the matrix. Disconnect the feed and reurn pipes at the engine end and reverse flush (passenger side to drver side).

When refilling, once the water bottle is full,leave the cap OFF and start the engine.

During warm up top as neccesary,leave the cap off until the gauge starts to rise.
