Title: Dodgy idling/stalling FIXED!!
Post by nitram on May 17th, 2005, 1:26pm
Hi guys,

Having a problem with a 16v 2.0..

Sometimes when I start the engine revs then stalls (Unless I put some extra revs on to keep it going)

Sometimes when I start the engine will run, but it revs to about 1200rpm then drops to almost stall, but then it puts revs back onto 1200, then drops to nearly stall again, etc. Usually this means that as soon as I put it in drive/reverse it stalls.

Usually once I've managed to get going it's fine when I come to a halt, although sometimes it has stalled when I've put it from drive to reverse once I've got home.

Is there a particular sensor that a non car techie person can check/clean to rectify this?

I've also been told that the battery is on it's way out, and I was wondering if this can contribute to this or not ??? Sometimes when I wind the window down while idling my headlights will actually dim. Sorry, just clutching at straws.

Hope you can help me, it's driving me mad!!

why have you been told the battery is on the way out.?,have you been having the usual flickering of the dials on start up..?
regarding the idling, have you checked the ICV ,some members have cleaned this up and reported that idling is better

Hi
I had a similar problem, it turned out to be the fuel cut off loom. I fitted a replacement (£100 from Fordpartsuk.com) took about 2 hours to do as some of the conections are hard to reach.

I haven't been told the battery is causing these problems, Just the usual tests (Holding charge, etc.) have shown it to be nearly ready for replacement. I haven't had any of the usual symptoms and it starts fine. Keeping it running is the problem! Like I said, just clutching at straws! I'll take a look at the ICV when I've worked out what it is from this site ;) I hadn't thought of the fuel cut off, but my first thought would be that it isn't that, as I have no problems once it's running, but then like I said a car mechanic I aint! Thanks for the info guys.

ICV or i will eat my hat. Find it,clean it with carb cleaner.
The reason the lights dim when opening the windows is possibly because the Idle Control Valve isnt doing its job to compensate for the extra power drain on the electrics.
If cleaning doesnt fix it then its a new one needed.

Cheers guys,

I've had a good look around the site, but can't work out exactly where this ICV is and what it looks like. Could someone please give me some pointers as to where to find it/remove it/clean it/replace it?

Sorry if it is mentioned somewhere on here but I'm d**ned if I can find it!!

Cheers

Look here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/16vcomponents.htm
try cleaning with some carb cleaner but ensure that you refit with a good gasket (if one already fitted)

Have you tried cleaning the MAF.(refer to the site in the pre. post). This is a simple job and also requires cleaning with carb cleaner so if you are going to do th ICV you may as well do the MAF as well. I'd try thjis first because it is so easy and accessible. Two jubilee clips and a connector. HTH Simmo

Thanks once again! I knew it would be on here somewhere! :-[

I'll try and take a look at those over the weekend.

Incidentally I topped up the oil as it was running extremely low (More than I realised) and it seems to be running better already.

Before I hash this up, please can you confirm that this is the ICV:
http://www.martin-evans.com/ICV.JPG

And that I'm right to say I need to undo the bolt circled and the other one the other side and unplug to remove it?

I've bought a bottle of Redex carburettor cleaner. Should I just be dropping the ICV into the redex to soak, and for how long?

Thanks guys.

hi there

yes, that's the thing. we normally use carb cleaner in a spray can, but it should do the same. put a small amount in and leave it for a while, then empty it out. repeat until it becomes clear.

hth

btw. make sure you don't have any air leaks.

You will almost certainly need a new gasket too.

Incidentally, slightly to the left and up a bit from the circled bolt, is or was there a piece of bent plastic rod inserted in the (blind) hole.

There was one on my car but I snapped it off,it didnt do anything as far as I could see,I have allways wondered what it was, anyone??

Off topic

i got a 2.3 L 16 valves DOHC, but don't remeber of having a secod air intake or what's so ever. In the picture are two black hoses (one in the throttle body and another one near). So what's wrong with my car ???  is this another difference between 2.0 and 2.3 ???

hi there

this is for the VIS system. see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/flatspot.htm

the 2.3 has a special plastic intake manifold, so doesn't need the VIS system.

Cheers,

Still not got round to doing this! ::) If I go to a Ford dealers, what do I need to ask for? The gasket for the ICV? Or does someone have the finis code?

On the plastic rod note, I'll take a look and get back to you!

Cheers once again!

Another problem solved!

Finally got the gasket and some spray carb cleaner today - 10 minutes later, the engine seems to idle perfectly!

I just need to work out where the oil leak is coming from, now! ::)

Eddie - I'm afraid I couldn't see any bits of plastic!

Cheers once again
