Title: Auto-box oil
Post by geraghtyg on May 18th, 2005, 1:14pm
OK, so I've finally checked my autobox oil for the first time since I got the car over a year ago. Was getting a bit worried about scare stories about burnt oil and failing boxes so decided to check my oil.
Level is ok, however the color is kinda a light brown with a hint of red. Smells fine, not burnt or anything. Still has a kinda mineral smell to it. Gearbox itself is fine and have never had a problem with it. What I would like to know is - Is the gearbox on it's way out? Is it too late to change the oil and filter and whatever else needs to be changed?
I'm planning on getting the car resprayed in black and also to get the windows tinted but obviously won't be too keen if I have a car that is broken.
Forgot to mention that the car has just under 160,000KMs on it. Would the oil be just simply in need of a change. Please say this is so and that the oil is at the end of it's life

Well , my gearbox has  only  done  74K   and  your description  of  your  gearbox fluid  is  identical  to the colour and  smell   of mine. So   I'll be quite chuffed to get   another  80K   out of it  :-*

I agree  :) Sounds fine
But if you are still worried a Automatic Transmission Specialist will have the specialist equipment to suck out all the oil from the box including the torque converter and replace it with fresh without having to remove the sump pan.  You could like a did and have the filter changed in the box as well if you wanted to go the whole hog   ;) though this does mean having the sump pan removed  :)

Thanks Guys. You've rid me of worry :D
Might indeed go the whole hog and get the filter and all that done. At close on to 100,000 miles (I'll stick with miles to keep you guys over that side of the pind happy ;) ) the oil could probably do with a change. Fingers crossed all will go well although it'll be a month or so before I'll be able to afford to do that

Point of note for the 2.3DOHC 16 V engine, that for cars fitted with an autobox, the transmission fluid should be to the Ford spec:  WSS-M2C202-B but all the local Ford Agents are listing spec: ESP-M2C 166-H on their computors, whch was specified by Ford for use up to build date Aug '96. All cars after ,96 should use WSS spec oil.

Question: is it safe to use spec:ESP oil as directed by local Ford
