Title: Steering lock  and ignition key barrel
Post by km449 on May 22nd, 2005, 4:19pm
97 2.3 Ultima Auto 130k

Couldn't get the steering lock off this morning no matter how much "wiggling" of wheel. Tried both keys without success.

Called out Green Flag and their techie managed to free the lock by sliding a small screwdriver onto the pins underneath the steering wheel (that lock the steering wheel in position), allowing the wheel to turn and the car to be started

As soon as he removed the key the pins re-engaged and we were back to square 1.

In an effort to  stop the pins re-engaging and locking the steering wheel he slid a piece of card in, which seemed to work BUT he was then unable to turn the ignition key even though the steering wheel will move.

Even when removing the card the pins didn't re-engage - ie put us back in the position we started with.

So as things stand ignition key wont turn.

Any thoughts/advice/suggestions would be appreciated please. Is this a FMD job needing new and doubtless costly components? If so any idea of what sort of cost I am looking at!

Ho hum. Oh well at least I got out of going to the garden centre!!

Thanks

Keith

hi there

have you tried your red master key in it? sounds like the barrel or the key is worn.

FMD have quoted £98 to fit supply and fit new lock to existing keys. Does that sound reasonable?

I had mine done last year by my local FMD. It was £70 odd then so it is probably about right.

On a similar note...

I've been having the same problem and I think on mine it's the keys, rather than the barrel that is worn.

When I got the car I had 2x normal keys but no master key. I got a red master key cut (Yes, it should have one) but haven't got it programmed yet. Sometimes the old keys won't turn but my new master key does. So the answer is get a new normal key cut and programmed. What's the best way of doing this without a programmed master key?

Ford quoted me about £80 to program a new set of keys (Excluding the keys). Is there some independent place that can do this for less than Ford without a master key?

TIA

All sorted - new lock, original keys retained thank goodness.

The parts cost 10.41+VAT, the labour 72.80+VAT, so if you can do it yourself then it's maybe worth a go!

A round of applause on this occasion to Rates in Grays who had the car trailered to them at lunchtime and I had it back for 4.

Thanks to all for your help and advice on this one

Keith

as a quick 'get you home' solution, the following usually works!
remove cowling and then remove the ignition switch from the rear of the steering lock (2 small plastic tags normally).
you should now find that the steering lock will release with the key. you will need a screwdriver or key to fit into the ignition switch and turn it as 'normal' to start the car.
ive had to do this no end of times in my job as a breakdown mechanic! for some reason this is unique to fords, and works 9/10 times. very common. usually a new lock will do the job. should you need to remove the steering lock itself, the bolts will need drilling out as they are 'shear bolts'.

[] Same happened to me,I did what Bigmaltwo explained, removed the ignition switch, took out the barrel, started it with a screwdriver(for about a week) Bought a new barrel(£8.10 at the time) read the key(theres only 1-4) changed the tumblers to suit my existing keys, bingo!
Good to here alls ok now ;D
