have a 24v ultima and been having a few problems with water disappearing from the header tank and having to fill it up everyday. i have kept a close eye on the water level and have managed to never let it drop below the minimum level in the tank. water seems to be coming from above the alternator near the pipe that runs through the heads but not 100% sure. can anyone tell me if it is hard to sort this kind of leak or what is involved in fixing this problem as i know what damage it will do if i dont sort it out.

hi there

if it's the pipe(s) between the head, then i think it's a bit of a strip down of the top of the engine. other 24v owners should know more.

the hose that runs through the head is on the other side of the engine from the alternator, theres only the top hose & the one to the header on that side, usually leaks from the bits in the 'V' seem to run out the back of the engine or evaporate due to the heat, another good one on the 24v is the water pump, first sign usually seen when cold, look from underneath the engine at the vent hole at the bottom.

thanks for the replies guys what i meant was when i rev the engine there is water poring out of the right hand side of the engine above the ac compressor not alternator, it was late last night when i asked for help lol. it seems to be coming from a rubber hose that seems to lead into the heads. or that direction

unfortunatly barry it seems as though you have quite a job on your hands, never done one in situ, but told you can, but you still have to strip out the 'V' to get at it.

Barrie,

we had this problem on our 24v when bought but it was emptying itself even quicker than yours by the sound of it!!

We took it to our mechanic as it needed a few jobs doing and, from memory, he removed the silver part at the top (sorry not sure of proper name ;)) and the a/c compressor. The 2 pipes on ours that needed doing came from the thermostat. One pipe was quite short and curved, the other one ran up from the thermostat and went between the heads. Pipes cost just under £30 the pair from Ford main dealer who were very helpful and worked out from my babbling what I meant ;D

did it cost a lot dave as it does seem to be coming from that direction of the pipe that runs up between the heads, if not coming out of the head itself.
do you know if the heads have to come off

You should be able to get at the hose with just the inlets off, still not easy to poke the hose through the head, a lot more room with the injectors / fuel rails out of the way, if you do that make sure you get new injector seals as well, and be sure to check the water housings and wireing in the 'V' while you are there.

thanks martin i was beginning to feel sick as we have just bought the car and had it gas converted. we paid top whack for the car as it had a replacement 98 cossy lump with low miles put in, new engine loom and new gear box. thinking that we would have no problems but it had a leak from the gearbox dipstick which was a pig to fix and now this water problem. just don't understand why im having these problems now if the engine and box have been out.…

Barrie,

our end bill was a lot but we had loads done to it. As I say the pipes are about £30 from Ford for the 2. The mechanic we use did it very quickly, only had it a morning I think! The heads do NOT have to come off, it can be done by removing the air intakes, a/c comressor and as Martin says, the injectors.

You would be wise to have replacement gaskets ready, using the old ones probably won't work.

We needed:
-2 new inlet manifold gaskets
-6 injector seals
-2 "O" rings (for throttle body if I remember correctly...)

Think all those gaskets were about £16, again from Ford.

thanks for the info guys but i think that i will have to put it back in the garage to have the work done. i would have done it myself but i am a bit concerned about the lpg system. i will let you all know how i go on as it goes in on tuesday. but i just cant tell if the water is leaking out oif the pipes that go through the head or if it is leaking out the head it self. if it was the head what symtems would there be as i have no white smoke and there seems to be no loss of power

I have seen a few 24vs with a coolant weep between the head & block, dont usually leak to that extent, unless the head gasket has rotted away & blown out the side.
