thanks for the advice guys.
i tried barrs leak fix and it just made the situation worse
car is now in brampton waiting for tuesday to be fixed
they have given me a loan car to get me to and from work carlisle > brampton its a metro and does 0-60 in two days.
god im missing the old girl already.
however what i would like to know is could i have caused any more damage to the car.
it got me to work ok on saturday morning but on opening the bonnet to check the water situation their wasnt a drop any where i must have dumped it on the road somewhere between carlisle and brampton
the engine was smoking  and was very hot  there was no warning that the water had vanished in fact no warning lights lit at all on the cluster which did suprise me
come 1 oclock the guy from the garage came to pick my car up she started first time no knocks or anything no strange noises and he drove it the short distance to his garage.
everything seemed to be ok but is it possible i could of damaged the engine or anything else.
i know these cars are tough mechanically but i suppose im looking for the worst case senario to prepare removing funds from the holiday stash (ouch the wife and kids just hit me).
thanks guys
mark

I'm surprised your expansion tank    " Low Coolant "   warning light didn't come on.

You'll  find out pretty quickly  if serious damage has occured  to the engine  when you  give it a  long run.
