Title: slow metallic knocking when cornering??? Post by waynem325 on Jun 8th, 2005, 3:58pm Hi guys, Just bought a 98 2.3 Ultima estate (auto) today and I have noticed the knocking when going round right hand corners, especially roundabouts. I doesn't happen when travelling at slow speeds, though I'm not talking about breakneck speeds either. (The sort of speed you'd expect the shopping in the back to start toppling over) It doesn't happen round left hand bends, just right handers. It seems to get louder as the car goes faster. It sounds like its coming from under the right hand rear of the car....any idea's? I was kinda hoping it could be the wheel bearings. After pulling on the wheels yesterday there didn't seem to be any movement, but I'm going to check again now I have a little more time. Thought I'd check here first incase it could be a known problem before getting worried. Thanks in advance. Wayne |

Title: Re: slow metallic knocking when cornering??? Post by waynem325 on Jun 8th, 2005, 5:35pm Just had a quick look and I reckon the bearings are on their way out, but both sides seem to have the same amount of movement. I've also done a few laps of a local roundabout and the noise only appears when accelarating around the corner. Once my foot is off the accelarator then the noise stops. Seems very strange to me. I've also had a quick look under the car, but I'm not a mechanic and can't see anything that could be the cause. Why is it just the right and not the left hand side???? The mind boggles :P |

Title: Re: slow metallic knocking when cornering??? Post by bigmaltwo on Jun 12th, 2005, 2:06am possible problem areas are:- if noise gets worse on r/h bends suspect l/h w/bearings etc (rears are especially hard to diagnose unless ready to fall to bits)! or front drop links........make a horrible noise if worn! esp as wieght transfer will (un)load them when accelerating |

Title: Re: slow metallic knocking when cornering??? Post by waynem325 on Jun 12th, 2005, 8:04pm Thanks guys, I'm really not too sure on how to check the condition of above mentioned parts (apart from the wheel bearings-which seem a little past their best, though shouldn't give rise to my problem???) I think that this week i'll get it booked in to a local garage and have them take a look whilst they drain/change the autobox oil. Does anyone know any issues with the auto levelling on the rear suspension? I think the '98 estates have it and perhaps that could be playing up? (I'm unsure exactly how it works within the Scorpio) Fingers crossed! :) |

Title: Re: slow metallic knocking when cornering??? Post by waynem325 on Jun 29th, 2005, 12:33pm sorry its taken a while to get back with this one...but....... After taking it into the garage it turned out to be the drivers (nearside?) rear cv joint (nice one Martin :D) I took the opportunity to have the car inspected (as it was bought privately) whilst it was in and luckily that was the only problem-except for the loose sump bolt!!! ( Ex owner was the last to touch that!) Now its all fixed, and with 2 new tyres on the rear everything is tip top around the car, though my wallet took a little dent to the tune of £262. With the initial cost of £1500 for the car I think I've got a bargain for a total of £1762 so I'm still happy as Larry! (Who is Larry anyway???) Thanks for the advice guys Wayne ;) |
