Title: No Go in D with replaced auto box?
Post by gawsworthboy on Jun 16th, 2005, 9:43am
Helloooo, well I got my gearbox replaced with a secondhand unit (I'm not wealthy) last week and all was well till this morning!!!!
It wont move at all in D but drives fine in 1st, 2nd and reverse??
I can get it to engage 3rd and 4th in D only if I start off in 2nd then move the shift up to D.
Should I live with this problem or is this unit about to bite the dust?
cheers all.

hi there

can you give us a bit more info. what engine, what was wrong with the old box etc.

have you checked the level? have the car at operating temp, cycle through the gears WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AT ALL TIMES 3 times. then check the level, again with the engine running. should be a red colour and with no burnt smell to it.

also it could be http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=OBD;action=display;num=1100036439

does the o/d light flash?

Hi, I have a 1995 Ultima..2.0 16 valve. The old box was worn by all accounts....would not move the car on climbing up even smallish hills and would often refuse to engage any gear at all...it had done 156 K.
The levels on the replacement box are OK and appear new...local garage sourced for me from a breakers and fitted in a day.
Dont know the miles on this box though. How can you tell if it's the box or solanoid or some other fault without taking it somewhere to search for codes?
Cheers guy's.

hi there

have you cleaned the MAF http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm
that appears to fix a lot of g/box issues.
re code finding. most garages can do it. all you need is the code numbers and post them back here, we should be able to figure it out for you.

btw i'd go back to the garage and tell them. it should last longer than a week!

Thanks for the advice...persisting down now but will try the MAF solution when the rain stops....got some carb cleaner in the garage...will report back....Oh...the garage kindly said that as it was a used part it was not under any warranty....wont be going there again...thanks all.

IMHO because of the fact that they( the garage) sourced the exchange unit it is still down to them to replace or fix it. One week of normal motoring isnot enough to cause a box that was supposed to be OK to fail. They do have a responsibilty and as I stated they sourced the box NOT you.

If they prevaricate then go to your Local Trading Standards office they should at least be able to offer advice.

You are not asking for anything unreasonable, just a car that drives normally, and you paid them good money.

Thanks guy's...will follow your advice.
Will report back after cleaning MAF. The garage will now look at the car for me?? Could do with it fixing but they can look if they want...she is a nice electric blue colour.
Cheers

Changing all the Geabox oil and the sump filter might improve the engagemnet of gears and improve general overal performance. there is a pag on the site about it search for atuto transmission filter.
Here it is found it:
