Title: Dead trans mode selectors?
Post by Alf on Jun 28th, 2005, 9:44am
I searched the forum about this, but I couldn't find anything (or I can't search well  ;D ).

The problem is, that I can't select any modes (Sport, Economy, Winter) on my transmission, and my O/D switch doesn't switch anything. I can push the buttons fine, but nothing happens, the indicator light illuminates only till I release the button, then nothing.

The same with the O/D switch, but that doesn't light up anything at all (yes, the bulbs are OK in the dash).

May be only some electrical connection problem (corroded connectors may be?), or big trouble? I don't have an OBD2 cable yet, but I want to get one... (does anyone have one to sell?  ;D )

The vehicle is in an average shape, the engine runs fine and smooth (OK-OK, yesterday it stalled suddenly... but that's all yet), the transmission is OK as well (the oil is not so nice red, but not burnt, so it needs to be changed with the filter), changes very smoothly...

Any tips, advices?

Thanks in advance!!

Alf

The auto Transmission manual is here if its of any help
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autotrans.htm

Does sound to me that it could be the electrics on the gearbox , PRNGL switch or any one of namy sensors,
Where in the country are you as thre may be some one near who can do an OBD scan for you.

Not come across this one before though.

Thanks, I've already read that manual, but that didn't help yet. Strange thing for me as well...

I'm from Hungary, are there any members of the board from here? I would be surprised.  :)

Just one more question: does this transmission have something like an "emergency mode"? I mean, if there's a serious problem with it, can it change to a safe mode like Windows?  ;D

No as far as I understand it the whole engine management system can go into 'LOS' mode which is a get you home principle. see page 116 in the handbook

I see. It's sure that this is not my case now, because I can do 210 km/h with no problems.  ;D

Thanks, then I'll strip the transmission selector console, and check the wiring.

Ummm... still no luck with it.

Checked all the connections around the selector lever, everything looks OK.

But I still can't select any mode on my autobox.  :-/

And an other issue, may be related:
I can't use the board computers buttons (Mode, S, R), because they work very rarely. I checked and cleaned the small switches in it, they are fine, but most of the time they aren't operating, nothing changes on the display in the dash if I push them.  ???

Do you have any experiences about this?

Hi Alf,

this is a long shot:

I had a similar problem with the mode, S & R switches when my old battery was about to fail. If any of the needles flick from zero to full then back again when starting up then its almost certainly the battery. Not sure if that would also affect the drive mode though.

Hello Pegasus,

Thanks, yesterday was the first time that my dash did a 'reset' when I was starting up the engine... I'll try with an other battery to see if that's the problem... I hope, I really hope....

Hi Alf,

is it the battery? Or ...

I'd be interested to hear the final outcome.

Cheers

Hi Pegasus,

I couldn't change the battery yet, I just didn't have time to do that.

The dash didn't do a reset since that, though....

I'll keep you posted if I can do anything on the car. I think in 2-3 days...

Now I found that my engine is running extremely too rich, I have to investigate this also.... lot of problems.  :(

Cheers,
Alf

Hi Alf,

running too rich: have you had a scan? It could be the MAF or the fuel pressure regulator (if it stalls when starting up hot and LTFT shows about -10%). I've got same problem and will be replacing the FPR soon.

Check the site for more advice - its all here.

Hi Pegasus,

Hey, did you forgot your password  ;D

Thanks on the info, unfortunately here noone has an obd2 cable, so my only option is to ask the local Ford dealer, but that's very expensive here...

I cleaned the MAF twice (to make sure  ;D ), but nothing changed, the sensor can be faulty though, so cleaning doesn't help in that case. I don't know how to determine whether the sensor works or not without an obd2 lead.

I'll check the FPR upon the info here...

Thanks for the tips!

Cheers,

Alf
