Title: Auto Gearbox Oil
Post by RebGershon on Jun 30th, 2005, 6:29pm
Just been checking fluid levels on my newly aquired Scorpio 24v and autobox oil level seems exceedingly low. I removed the long black dipstick at the back end, left side of the engine block-is that the correct one?

I ran the engine until it warmed up but didn't engage any gears and the car is parked on a very slight incline.

What is the spec for the oil/fluid needed and how much should I buy for a 1995 N reg? Is there a separate filler cap or is it filled via the dipstick tube?

Many thanks in advance of your replies, I won't drive the car until I get replies.

Geoff.

hi there

did you have the engine running while you checked the level?

the correct way is to run engine to operating temp. cycle through all gears 3 times, then with the engine running still, check the level.

it should be at max, be a red colour and smell oily, not burnt. the spec is Dexron II or III.

Thanks for the reply scorpio_man. Perhaps I didn't let the engine heat up enough and I did take out what I thought to be the dipstick while the engine was still running but I certainly didn't cycle thro all the gears 3 times.  Any particular order?

TIA

Geoff

hi there

no order, just cycle up and down 3 times. make sure it 'picks up the gear' before moving on to the next gear.

if it's low, check for leaks from the cooler pipes.

I'm just before the change of the oil and the filter. How much oil is needed? Any recommended brands, for the filter also?

Thanks in advance.

If and when you drop the sump off the auto box ( Very messy job as ther is no drain plug on the g/box) you will find the filter there. It will however only require about 4 litres of Oil to replace what you have taken out as a large amount about 50% remains in the oilways and torque converter. Specialist equipment is needed to extract this without taking the whole gearbox out .

What I have heard some people do is change the oil and filter and then in say 3/6months do it again, that way about 75% of the oil is changed and there is a brand new filter in every time.

Fords state that the oil is in for the lifetime f the car but it does have to work extremely hard and therefore must have some deterioration.

An auto box specialist will charge about £100 for this job.

Dexron lll is the stuff or lV may well be suitable check with the spec before using that but lll definately IS ok.
Good luck
