Title: Smoking hot brakes?
Post by sardine on Jul 2nd, 2005, 10:19pm
Hi guys

on two occasions lately I've had cause to brake suddenly on the motorway (accidents ahead of me)

On both occasions i had a cloud of white smoke from the rear which lasted about 30 secs before clearing.

i've no smoke fromt he exhaust and the rest of the car (24v estate M reg) is fine

The brakes and ABS look and work fine - in fact they are the best brakes I've ever used on any car.

Nevertheless I have noticed that even after sedate town driving with little braking, when I park the car i can really feel a lot of heat radiating from the wheels - even the alloys are hot.  The front wings over the arches are very hot to touch but the engine compartment is fine.

I know it's a big powerful car but this can't be right can it?

Could this be due to incorrect discs or pads?  Also - I thought if the brakes were to smoke or give off clouds of dust this would be more evident from the front?

Anyone heard of this?

Many thanks

Darren

Sounds very much like a brake binding problem, how's your MPG?  are your discs  blue ?

Can  you  freewheel  easily up to a junction or  down a  small slope ?

Hello !

Can the hand brake remain a bit stiff ? and althrough the lever is down the pads are a little to close to the discs ???

Try to hand barke a little while driving ( but not to hard  ;))

We had a similar problem briefly on an old Nissan.. turned out to be the handbrake. It had been poorly adjusted by a mechanic and was basically sticking on one side, made the entire wheel hot just like you say. Drum brakes of course.

However if the problem began spontaneously then it's less likely to be that.

Let us know what happens.

thanks for replies.

THe MPG is dreadful- but I put that down to the 3L! I guess I get 15mpg in town and 25 on the open road so I felt this is par for the course.

I'm not sure how it freewheels- being auto - but I could try to pop it in neutral downhill.

The discs aren't blue they're just a gray colour..

The handbrake seems to be fine.

I wonder if the back brakes only realy 'bite' when braking hard and maybe the pads are shot and the cloud is just dust but I think this is probably hopeful.

I think I'll change the rear pads and seehow I get on - any recommendations - are there aftermarket pads which work more efficiently?
