Title: Help - Auto 4th, Faulty PCM?? Solenoid?
Post by oz_scorpio on Jul 3rd, 2005, 5:02pm
My '95 2.0 16v Estate (75K) won't engage 4th (the o/d switch activates the dash-board light but nothing happens) and the engine fans won't come on (engine over-heating in traffic) ..

I dont' know if the problems are related but I left the car with a local (non-specialist) garage who after three days said 'it must be the computer, get rid of the car'  >:(

They said that there was no 'feed' (current?) to the fan or gear-box and having checked the obvious fuses said it must be the 'computer' (the EECV PCM under the glove box?).

I've cleaned the MAF (which appeared spotless anyway) and removed and sprayed WD40 on the Fan solenoid (green box) pins (I also found a screw to attach it to the engine bay as it was hanging loose)  - all to no avail.

I don't have an OBD cable but what next?

Thanks

hi there

first the fans. take of the temp sensor plug near the thermostat. i can't remember which one (1 wire or the 2 wire one). turn on the ignition and both fans should come on in high speed mode. you'll know if th fans work or not.

re gearbox. first of all, does the o/d light flash on and off? what sort of rpm v's speed? my 2.3 indicates about 80mph at 3000rpm. does this sound about right?

did the garage check for any codes? this would take a lot of the quess work out of it.

have you checked the level? the correct way is to run engine to operating temp. cycle through all gears 3 times, then with the engine running still, check the level.

Thanks hth,

Fans - where do I locate the temp sensor & thermostat in the 2.0L DOHC bay? I presume that the cooling fan operation is controlled by the PCM?

Gearbox - o/d light operates normally (no flashing) but no response from the box. I'll check the revs tonight  but I'm sure its not kicking up into 4th. The fliud levels seem normal.

The garage had no OBDII reader - looks like I'll have to go to a main dealer (gulp!) ..

Thanks again

Fans -  (The diagram was a great help, thanks) I pulled the plug off the temp sensor, turned the ignition on but the fans did not come on  :(  Also when I replaced the plug (a tight spot),  the dash temp guage still reads full hot.

No signal coming from the PCM perhaps?

Auto Box - The tacho is pulling over 4200 rpm at 75 mph - i.e  not kicking into overdrive 4th.

Will any OBD2 compatible cable work on the Scorpio (using the coreect Ford OBD2 s/w)?  - I've seen a few for £15 on ebay

Thanks

the temperature gauge I think is operated seperately from the fan switch it will read full scale if shorted out so it might be the sender unit thats faulty for the gauge. and to get the fans on i also think you have to short out the two connectors also there is a fan relay on the offside of the engine compartment near the headlight.... Its a BIG green one have you checked that.

hi there

when you remove the correct plug the fans will run. maybe they short themself? or you could put a direct feed to each fan from the battey (just be careful!)

re obd-2 hardware/software. we use VE software/lead from alex peper. see http://www.obd-2.com/#home

Still at it - I removed the temp sensor plug in the diagram kindly sent in this thread. The fans did not activate - I also managed to damage the sensor (its in a tight spot) and my dash temp guage reads full hot constantly - I've ordered a new sensor.

What are the other temp senser plugs I should try?

I'm also starting to suspect the PCM itself as the gear-box won't kick into 4th..  Can I interchage another second-hand PCM easily?

meanwhile I'm waiting on an OBD-II cable (is there anyone in the Maidenhead area with a cable??)

I'll keep at it..

Thanks guys - I replaced the faulty temp sender unit as suggested and the now Fans work fine - end of overheating problem - great news and another success for the fordscorpio site! I did 500 miles on the weekend -no worries  :)

I still have no o/d 4th and I'm getting the run around from local mechanics and Ford main dealers. The two I tried (Ford Marlow and Ford Eton) did not have an FDS (only a WDS) and suggested having the autobox reconditioned at '3D transmissions' http://www.3d-transmissions.co.uk/index.html, Reading  (where they send their auto-box problems). All this without looking at my Scorpio!!

I think I'll go the self-help OBD-II route first.

hi there

it's a bit worring that they didn't know wds is just a newer version of fds and will work with the scorpio. :(
