Title: Re: Over drive Post by mr._floppy on Jul 5th, 2005, 6:19pm On an automatic gearbox the overdrive ( 4th) gear is selected automatically by the gearbox depending on the engine load and speed, usually at about 50mph. On most variants there is a overdrive on/off button with dashboard indication on the gear selector which, when pressed, keeps the car in 3rd gear until the button is pressed again. On a manual box overdrive ( or 5th gear ) should be used when cruising above 50mph. |

Title: Re: Over drive Post by nitram on Jul 6th, 2005, 11:31am I use the overdrive button on the auto gearbox when I'm just at that speed where it keeps flicking between 3rd and 4th, eg. I'm going down a windy road, so I'm speeding up/slowing down around the changeover point. I also find it useful for joining a busy motorway, when I'm attempting to get on, then across the lanes. It stops it dropping into 4th just as you're about to boot it to get in the outside lane! Also, if I'm planning to accelerate quickly, I sometimes use that to drop to 3rd, rather than rely on the kickdown, which would take a moment to engage. HTH Martin. |
