Title: Driveshaft
Post by DJWerkz on Jul 7th, 2005, 8:41am
Just been reading up on installing the gearbox etc. as part of my replacement engine install and noticed there is a 'caution note' in the Ford Workshop Manual that states the driveshaft is carefully balanced by using four fixing bolts of different lengths.  These should be clearly marked on removal so they are re-installed in the correct location.
What happens if they are not marked, how would you determine which bolt goes where? (we are putting the car back together after someone else had originally worked on the vehicle, someone we don't want coming anywhere near the car again!).

still at it then DJ, have you measured the prop bolts, I measured the last couple of sets I have removed, they were all the same, you either take pot luck or take the shaft to have it balanced, thats if you can find somewhere close to you, if balance is out you may notice a vibration through the car at certain speeds dependant on how far out the shaft is, just like an out of ballance tyre

Hi Martin,

Yes my man, still at it,...well it keeps me out of trouble!

Not measured the bolts yet, was just doing some preliminary reading before going over to the lock up to start prepping everything for re-install.  Will measure the bolts and hope, like you say they will be the same length, and, I will not notice any vibration when driving.

Regards,

Craig

Ain't  that  what Tipex is for ?   or pinch the kids coloured chalks

A  wee  blob of paint  to  ensure  proper  matching  on the prop/diff   flanges,    then mark   each  bolt  and  its corresponding  hole with a  different  coloured chalk.

Mr. Floppy, read the earlier post, you will see we are putting the car back together after previous hands dismantled everything without marking the parts!
Hands that proved to be totally incapable of doing anything right with the car.

That might be an idea, I will check the bolts tomorrow as we are starting the prep work in getting everything lined up ready for the install.
