Title: HBC Project
Post by Geoff_W on Jul 16th, 2005, 11:44pm
Hi Folks,

We know that the HBC had a modified heat sink fitted have a look at the piccies on the aircon page

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aircon.htm

My first packed in on a trip through the Ardennes when external temp on screen was 35C, I am getting indicators that my second modified HBC is becoming suspect, I know that the HBC has a fundamental effect on fan operation and think that on really hot days it may be a weakpoint in the CC system when the CC is working the fans hard.

I plan to look at ways of further beefing up the heat sink and am looking for ideas. Has anybody already enhanced their HBC, if so what did you do?

Also has anyone opened one of these up to see the ratings of components used, if so can we replace them with more capable items?

One option may be to replace the existing piece of aluminium riveted onto the HBC with a bigger or heavier gauge piece, or to use a processor heat sink as used in computers in addition to the modified one. I will let you know how things work out.

I am also looking at the AC Mod as one piece of feedback is that the system does not seem to be working as hard to cool the car in hot weather.

Yep AC mod does that, even on LO setting it cools quick and just maintains temp ticking over, not flat out as before

Yes that does sound good.

Thanks Highlander

hi geoff

i think jamie looked at it for awhile, but though it would take too much time/money to fix.

if i remember correctly, the problem is when the hbc makes the fans go slowly. the resistors heat up, hence the overheating issue. one of the things we talked about was using the jetex pollen filters. we thought they had a better airflow though them. thus cooling the hbc. i'm using them (need changing, though), but still get the code 57 every now and again. i must say, i don't see much difference.

good luck if you try something new.

Thanks Andrew,

Going to spend some time looking at this so if I do come up with anything I will let you know. Bearing in mind Jamies electrical expertise, I will concentrate on the none electrical elements, airflow and heatsink.
