Title: engine cut out on motorway
Post by mike.g on Jul 24th, 2005, 6:23pm
hi,

my scorpio has died on me 3 times now in the last 6 months.

at first I was accelerating hard up a hill on a dual track and it died as it changed from 3rd to 4th on full throttle after hitting rev limiter.

next time it did it again on a motorway, again accelerating up hill and I think on the gear change but not quite so hard acceleration.

last time, again on a motorway but just cruising at about 60mph as I was being very cautious, no gear change (I think) involved.

not nice when brakes and steering go!!

it has been in LPG as it's always driven in LPG.

after the failure it is difficult to restart and often stalls after 10 sec on idle.

if I keep the revs up and keep it in second or third gear it carries on.

seems it might be LPG but does to someone skilled this might be a classic sympton of some other problem.

hi there

thanks for that! ;) ;D
i did see it. hoping someone else answered it first!

rev limiter...no need to tell you that's a bad thing! you're way pass max power/torque.

1 & 2 could both be explained by hitting some type of rev limiter built in to the lpg ecu (i think). but that doesn't explain 3.

are there any other signs? does your lpg kit have diagnostic light? it could be a dodgy solenoid in the lpg kit. mine has 2 (i think). 1 in the rear (tank) and 1 on the regulator.

the hard starting bit. does it start on petrol? what about with the lpg off? that could point to duel fueling.

real hard one this. all quess work. try it for a few days with only petrol. see how that goes, but it does sound lpg related.
have a read of what happened to mine. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/lpg2.3_2.htm

are you in england? english gas isn't as 'clean' as scottish gas (so i've been told), so i could be full of an oily stuff in the regulator. as i said before, hard to figure out without being there. the lpg kit isn't something i'd like to mess about with.

hopefully martin (martin_rowe) will see this and know more. ???

Did you notice anything under the bonnet covered in ICE?
Could be the evaporater icing up and blocking the gas flow.
Remedy is to ensure there is not an airlock in the water/cooling side of the unit. It uses hot water from the cooling system to evaporate the liquid (gas) into ..Gas!

hello,

thanks for the replies.

when it goes I always switch back to petrol to restart (even though it will always start in petrol enyway)

It isn't freezing over inside.

I am in England.

The thing inside the tank with the fuel level display (is this the regulator?) was recently replaced before this happend. So could it be this?

I don't actually drive it very often, except when needing to do a long journey. Haven't run it on a long journey in petrol as it's sooo much more expensive!! but suppose I need to try that.

One other point is that it's always hard to restart if used for a very short journey then you try and restart within 5 minutes.

hi mike

strange one this. :-/

regulator = vaporizer.

why was a part replaced? this might shed some light on the problem.

Hi Mike
as posted, firts try same type of run on petrol, make sure the vaporiser (large lump under bonett with all the pipes & hoses on it gets hot) poor re start after cut out on lpg it normal, check all electriacl connections, after lpg system has opperated for a while, check all solenoid windings with your hand to see if one is getting hoter than the others, do you have the ability to check llambda voltage when on the move, high rpm/load.
just a few basics to keep you going.
Martin
