Title: Temp gauge fluctuation
Post by km449 on Aug 3rd, 2005, 9:17am
Had my 2.3 97 Ultima Auto Estate for 18 months and when I bought it the previous owner pointed out that the temp gauge rarely worked, although occasionally it would put in an appearance.
Car has been fine.
Recently the gauge has started to work properly, with no intervention by me, only for it to slowly drop back to the bottom, and then return to the normal half way point. The time scales vary from 5 secs to minutes.
It's not losing water or overheating at all, but I would like to nail the gauge one way or another so to speak!
It's mildly distracting to see it fluctuate so, particularly when it's in its 5 sec mode!!
Suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks as always
Keith

Hi mate,

Sounds like you have a dry joint on the board at the back of the instrument cluster. Not uncommon on these beasts. You can take the cluster out and then by looking around the solder joints at the back of the temp guage you will almost certainly find one which looks like it has a crack around the top.... that's the dry joint. The reason that it causes the guage to fluctuate is that as the temperature in the car changes, it causes the connection to make and then break. Resoldering the joint will cure the problem. It's worth checking all the other joints at the same time and resoldering any that look suspicious.

In my case (2.0L 16v -95) it was the water temperature plug (gauge) near the thermostat box.
It was so "old" that wires/connections were bad.
In -95 the is one wire, -96 and on there is two wires.
