Title: Compressor cutting in/out
Post by Chad66 on Aug 5th, 2005, 1:53pm
Advice needed please.....

When the engine is ticking over, the air con compressor keeps switching off for about 2-3 seconds then on for about 2-3 seconds repeatedly...

If I increase the revs by a couple of hundred the compressor keeps on running...

Only happens when ticking over...during a run the air con works a treat....fully regassed/oiled and no leaks..

Ideas anyone??

hi there

the a/c compressor should cycle on and off with the fans on slow speed. is this happening?

Yep, fans are turning as this is happening...

As the compressor is cutting in and out the engine revs drop to almost stall whilst the compressor cuts in and then back to 700-800 rpm when it cuts out again...so you get the effect of the engine 'hunting' rather than ticking over nicely....

hope that makes more sense... :-/

hi there

sounds like the compressor is seizing a bit. maybe the car can cut the feed to the compressor to lessen the load on the engine. :-/

the only other thing i can think of is the icv. does it idle ok with the a/c off?

Yeah, tick over perfectly fine with the aircon off....

New compressor/condensor/dryer fitted in April 2005...and i had it checked today to see if it was the air con system playing up....engineer reckons system ok...and as i say, once the revs are up the compressor runs sweet as a nut....strange aint it??

i was wondering if there is some kind of sensor that should pick up engine load and increase revs accordingly?...or is this the job of the icv?

IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) Valve

The EECV Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the idle of the engine by means of Spark Advance, the INJector duration, and by controlling the flow of air through the Air Bypass Pipe at the throttle body. The IACV is mounted at the throttle body and moderates the flow of air bypassing the throttle plate. The IAC is actually a solenoid which controls the position of a pintle valve, position of which is directly related to the current through the solenoid. By varying this current, the pintle can maintain any position from fully closed to fully open.

The IAC is checked electrically for open and shorts.

Is this the same for a 12v.. this has the EEC IV rather than the V
