today i tried to start my 96 diesel. it made a teriible noise, as if the piston would bump against the valves and you could hear the steaming of the cylinders very loud. i guess this sound is generated by an open valve, so that the exhaust sound goes thru the intake filter. i remembered that another diesel owner posted this problem and it was a tappet rod, which was jumped out of its place.
does anybody know the post and can give me a link?

Hi Achim ...I can't list the post but yes ..it's very common to throw a pushrod on that engine .. take off the cover and you can get it back in without too much problem .. the cause is something different but that will get you out of trouble for now .. regards ..... STN
