My Car A scorpio Ultima 12v hasvery high fuel consumption I have checked for leaks, result.... None.

Done a full service and changed plugs leads filters etc.

Any other sensible suggestion would be appreciated!

What are you classing as high fuel consumption? How are you measuring the consumption

I have the 2.9 24v and I can get just over 30mpg on a motorway run if im being nice, just running locally I get 24/25 but if i get in the mood and boot it then its about 20 (especially after a few beers ;))

An incorrect tyre gauge at my local garage was costing me 5mpg!! double check it!
Are you reading it via the fuel computer? or filling the tank each time to work it out?

I have the same problem with my 12v estate -96. My old granada/scorpio ghia from -87 is alot sheaper.

I have done the same as you and next step for me is to change the.... thermostat (Swedish name)? I want the water in my engine to be warmer alot faster than today. Now it takes almost 20 mins and this in summertime, not good for fuelconsumption i think.

I have noticed that when I start the car and drive off the miles left in the tank drops in a matter of a mile by 20 miles this happens every time andwhen I fill up I get no more than 280 miles to a tank of fuel I used to get about 340 my average fuel consumption has droped to 20.1 and my ave speed is 34mph. when I actually get motoring on the motorway the mileage does creep up but nothing to like it used to.
I used to get about 420 miles to a tank of fuel on a good run. now it never gets above 350.

Do you think it would be worth chaging the HUGo sensors before the cat?

hallo!

I had the same problem on my 2.0l 16v. It turned out to be dirty fuel injectors due to the age and bad gasoline. Air/fuel ratio became leaner. OBDII scanner detected longer injector pulses - that was the PCM trying to make the mixture rich to compensate! Worth cleaning them on special equipment!

My 12v averages 20 mpg around town and goes up to a whopping 24 mpg on a run and its been like that since I've had it.

This works out at abut 250-260 miles on a tankfull, although I recently managed an all time record of 390 miles on a return trip to up to Yorkshire.

The 12v seems especially heavy on fuel, more so than the 24v, and it came as a shock to me after running a 2.0 Granada which would average 32 mpg.

£58 for a tank of petrol is not funny, especially when it doesn't last more than a week!!! :o :o

Me,
You shouldn't rely on the fuel computer - this shows an average over the past 10 or 15 minutes only - it's why the range to empty increases when you get on a motorway.
Have a look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/consumption.htm and check out the method - this is the only way to get a proper fuel consumption figure.
Do this first to get a baseline, and then carry out the following:
1. Full service - plugs, air filter etc. Clean or replace the distributor cap and ht leads - this can have a marked effect on mpg.
2. Put a couple of shots of Fuel Injector Cleaner in the tank before any long run.
3. Be especially careful with tyre pressures - check them every week. Make sure the front tyres are tracked correctly - scrubbing can waste lots of fuel.
4. Jack up the car and check that all four wheels can spin freely without the brakes binding. Check that the rear axle CV joints are not binding.
5. Consider changing the thermostat. If it is stuck open then the engine will not be getting to full heat.
6. Get a reading of STAR codes from your EECIV - if an HO2S sensor is getting slow it can cause the engine to run rich - it should also see any fault codes for failing IAT or ECT sensors. You could also check these with a multimeter using the readings from http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/sensors.htm
7. Are you sure that the Torque Converter Clutch is locking up? Check your revs at cruising at 70 and we can compare them with another 12V. If the TCC isn't engaging this will waste a lot of fuel, and it can be caused by a faulty Trans Temp Sensor without any other symptom.

Run through these and then do another mpg test and you'll see if there's any improvement.

How much does you car need at idle? My estate wants 1.3 litre per hour when it's warm and around 2 l/h when the needle is at the blue. Because my car takes forever to be warm as i described earlier my car want around 1.8 l/10 km in the city but have normal fuelconsumption on the highway when the engine reach normal temprature.
