just replaced hose from thermo to top of engine ( the 1 that goes through the engine).  the thing is now i start up the car the temp gage is fine for 5 mins and then it rises very close to the red area and the fans cut in but when i speed up the gage comes down ??? please help

Try reading this and check out the appropriate links http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cooling.htm. I think the usual advice is to run the engine for a while with the radiator cap removed in order to let any airlocks escape. Worth a try.

You have installed the thermostat in the right direction, haven't you?  That would fit this symptom.

Otherwise, check the small tube that runs from the top of the expansion tank to the top of the water pump - if this is blocked or kinked then it can cause an air lock.   ;)

BTW, well done on your work so far.  There are many Main Dealers who have messed up the air inlet system, so you have done very well to replace that pesky heater pipe on your own.   ;D
