Title: Possible Spark Knock Issue
Post by macattack on Sep 1st, 2005, 11:50am
Well here's hoping!!  still waiting on my OBD leads from the states so I have not been able to get a scan as yet, but here's the problem. 97 2.3 ultima auto

when driving at approximatly 70mph and disengaging overdrive, as the rev's reach around the 3800rpm and above I hear what I can only explain to sound like severe spark knock from what I would say is the intake area of the engine.  I say that as best i can pinpoint the noise it sounds like that side of the car and I would guess hearing I am hearing it through the intake system.  Also at that point power seems to peak and the car refuses to pull anymore.

Strnage thing is that if you come to a complete stop for example and manually go through the gears it pulls great through that rpm range, it only seems to do it under the load of being on the highway.

I have not replaced the normal harness issue but havehad it off this week and gone over it completly and while it ain;t a new one, there's nothing wrong with it.

In the old days, i'd say adjust the timing but hey not that old distributor time anymore and I am also running BP's ultima so it ain;t octane either.

The car idle's fine, runs fine in all gears and pulls fine from town driving to cruising upto 70+ it just when you try dropping it back to pass or when your on cruise and the overdrive kicks out to accelerate.

answers on the back of a postcard anyone?
